Revisit: What if you were a Hebrew slave in Egypt?

[First posted in April 2012, reposted every Passover (April 19-27 this year 2019) when observant Israel commemorates two feasts that recount the history of their liberation from Egyptian bondage:

  • Passover/Pesach and

The starting point of any journey is significant in the sense that the traveller has to determine what he should pack for the trip.  In the biblical account of the Exodus, the Israelites were given specific instructions on how to prepare for their freedom trek out of the land of their bondage, Egypt, into uncertain territory through the wilderness of Sinai toward the Land of promise.

Put yourself in a Hebrew slave’s place and think the thoughts he might have pondered:

  • For such a journey, what does a slave bring?
  • What worldly possessions might a slave have to even pack?
  • What about food provisions to physically survive in an inhospitable environment; would we have enough to last the unspecified time it would take?
  • There are so many UNKNOWNS!

Think and consider:

  • Why leave familiar surroundings in Egypt, insufferable though life is in what has become “home” for our people for 400 years?
  • At least we have access to daily bread between non-stop-no-rest back-breaking-brick-making labor; better the devil we know!
  • What to do, what to do . . . .not to worry, we’re assured after all, that the travel orders come from . . . Whom?
  • What did Moses say His Name was? is? will be?
  • Have Israelites heard that Name before?

Didn’t word get around that the Pharaoh didn’t recognize that God and answered:

 Exodus/Shemoth 5:2

 Pharaoh said:

 “Who is YHVH,

that I should hearken to his voice to send Israel free?

 I do not know YHVH,

moreover, Israel I will not send free!”

Pharaoh does not know this god, never heard his name before.

  • Do we know the name of our God?
  • Were we ever told by our parents, were they told by theirs, through generations since the first generation of Yaakobites/Israelites came to live in Egypt some 400 years ago?
  • Do we even remember the name of the God of our patriarch Jacob?
  • Weren’t we often told the story about our forefather’s night experience, wrestling with that mysterious figure?
  • Before parting, didn’t he have an opportunity to ask for a name and did he get a straight answer?
  • What was the name, can we remember  . . .?

Genesis/Bereshith 32:28-30

28 He said to him:

What is your name?

And he said: Yaakov.

29 Then he said:

Not as Yaakov/Heel-sneak shall your name be henceforth uttered,

but rather as Yisrael/God-fighter,

for you have fought with God and men

and have prevailed.

30 Then Yaakov asked and said:

Pray tell me your name!

But he said: Now why do you ask after

my name?

And he gave him farewell-blessing there.

31  Yaakov called the name of the place: Peniel/Face of God,

for I have seen God

face to face,

and my life has been saved.

So if our patriarch Jacob didn’t get a straight answer,

  • how can generations of Israelites know our God’s name,
  • except as “the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” and “El Shaddai
  • which are not names at all?
  • Is not a name important for identity?
  • There are so many gods in Egypt, so many gods among the nations, how do we distinguish the true god who claims to be our god . . . if we don’t know his name?

Exodus/Shemoth 3:13-16

13 Moshe said to God:

Here, I will come to the Children of Israel

and I will say to them:

The God of your fathers has sent me to you,

and they will say to me: What is his name?-

what shall I say to them?

14 God said to Moshe:

EHYEH ASHER EHYEH/I will be-there howsoever I will be-there

. And he said:

Thus shall you say to the Children of Israel:

EHYEH/I-WILL-BE-THERE sends me to you.

15 And God said further to Moshe:

Thus shall you say to the Children of Israel:

YHVH,

the God of your fathers,

the God of Avraham, the God of Yitzhak, and the God of Yaakov, sends me to you.

That is my name for the ages,

that is my title (from) generation to generation.

16 Go,

gather the elders of Israel

and say to them:

YHVH, the God of your fathers, has been seen by me, the God of Avraham, of Yitzhak, and of Yaakov, saying:

I have taken account, yes, account of you and of what is being

done to you in Egypt,

Exodus/Shemoth 6:2-3

2 God spoke to Moshe,

he said to him:

 am YHVH.

3 I was seen by Avraham, by Yitzhak, and by Yaakov

as God Shaddai,

but (by) my name YHVH I was not known to them.

YHWH . . . that’s a name we’ve never heard before!

  • How do we know he’s the one?
  • Are we  supposed to swallow everything that comes from the mouth of that messenger, what’s his name, Moses?
  • Sounds like Thut-moses, Ra-moses, or Ramses, aren’t those Egyptian names?
  • Is he Egyptian?
  • Wasn’t he connected somewhat to the Pharaoh’s family?
  • Didn’t he disappear 40 years ago?
  • What’s he doing coming back here?
  • Can we trust someone who was never one of us, never living with us, never slaving away with us from the very beginning?

But, as we’ve already witnessed,  9 plagues have stricken the Egyptians right and left, while we and our homes have been spared!  That should make us think!  How many more proofs do we need to believe the power of this God whose name is YHWH and His sincerity in going to all this trouble to liberate us? Why us?

This YHWH has chosen us

even if we have not chosen him!

  • Who are we to say NO to FREE GRACE?
  • This is our chance to get out of this miserable life!
  • What have we done to deserve living like this for generations, with no rest from our labors?
  • And with the Pharaoh making it even more impossible for us to make bricks!
  •  Sometimes we wish this Moses would back off, he’s caused us more misery and heavier burdens!
  • But perhaps that’s part of the power play; this Moses seems to have quite a few tricks up his sleeve but he’s only a man, so the plagues upon the Egyptians must be coming from the God whose name Moses proclaims!

And now we ourselves are being put to a test!

  •  Whereas previously we were simply witnesses to the miracles of this YHWH, now we are told to participate in the plague against the firstborn.
  • Couldn’t we just huddle quietly inside our home the way we did during previous plagues?
  • Must we now take part by following the final instructions?
  • And how strange these instructions are!

Would we dare slaughter one of Egypt’s gods—a lamb—right here in Egypt?

Exodus 8:21-23

21 Pharaoh had Moshe and Aharon called

and said:

Go, slaughter (offerings) to your god in the land!

22 Moshe said:

It would not be wise to do thus:

for Egypt’s abomination is what we slaughter for our God;

if we were to slaughter Egypt’s abomination before their eyes,

would they not stone us?

23 Let us go a three days’ journey into the wilderness,

and we shall slaughter (offerings) to YHVH our God, as he has said to us.

Image from pjsprayerline.blogspot.com

As if that’s not hard enough,

  • we have to roast this lamb; just think of the aroma of roasting meat wafting all over Egypt, they’ll know what we’re doing when they smell it!
  • Then we’re supposed to eat it and not leave anything.
  • As if that’s not enough for faint-hearted slaves like us, worse, we are commanded to further flaunt our disrespect for their god by splattering the lamb’s blood on the lintel and doorposts of our houses.
  • Isn’t that the height of insult, that blood evidence will surely identify us and the Egyptians will slaughter us if they recover from the most recent plague!

What to do, what to do . . . do we have a choice?

  • For the first time in our hopeless life of slavery, we have been given an opportunity to make a decision for ourselves!
  • The alternative to slavery, to a lifetime of bondage, is being served to us on a silver platter by the God of our patriarchs.
  • All we are asked to do is to take that leap of faith!
  • Obey all instructions to the letter, and let our rediscovered Self-Revealing God do the rest!
  • He has already shown what He has done to Egypt’s other gods, do we need one more proof of His power?

Exodus 12:12-13

12 I will proceed through the land of Egypt on this night and strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from man to beast,

and on all the gods of Egypt I will render judgment,

I, YHVH.

13 Now the blood will be a sign for you upon the houses where you are:

when I see the blood, I will pass over you,

the blow will not become a bringer-of-ruin to you, when I strike down the land of Egypt.

Who was it who said ‘You shall know the truth the truth will set you free?‘ (Oops, that’s in the New Testament, supposedly said by Jesus, picked up by Dr. Martin Luther King for his freedom march. Still, that statement is so true!)

Sinaites have come to know the Truth about the One True God and this Truth has indeed set us free! Free from what?

Let’s start with the obvious:  IGNORANCE!

And the second obvious:  MANMADE “TRUTHS”!

The God we have sought all our lives is the God who commissioned Israel to declare Him to the gentiles like ourselves; we have come to believe in the original good news:

YHWH reigns today and as foretold by the prophet Zechariah 14:9:

JPS/And the LORD shall be King over all the earth;

in that day shall the LORD be One, and His name one.

You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.

He liberates all who are in bondage to ignorance and falsehood but there is a condition to such freedom:  one must decide, just like the Hebrew slave, to believe in this God and and what He has promised to all who seek Him, take Him at His Word, and let Him have the last word:

Do not add to what I command you

and do not subtract from it,

but keep the commands of the LORD your God

that I give you.

(Deuteronomy 4:2)

But if from there you seek the LORD your God,

you will find him if you seek him

with all your heart and with all your soul.

(Deuteronomy 4:29)

12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

14 I will be found by you,”

(Jeremiah 29:12-14)

Hear, O Jew, O Gentile:

“I will be found by you!”

and rest on Your set-apart seventh day.

Following the erev tradition of Your chosen people,

we kindle the lights of Sabbath,

and symbolically invite the light of Your Torah

[The God of Abraham Praise/slightly revised lyrics]

1.  The God of Abraham praise,

Who reigns enthroned above;

Ancient of everlasting days, and God of love;

Yahuwah, great I AM, by earth and heav’n confessed,

I  bow to praise the Sacred Name, be forever blest.

2.  He by Himself hath sworn, I on His oath depend;

I shall on eagle’s wings upborne to heav’n ascend;

I shall behold His Face, I shall His power adore,

And sing the wonders of His grace forevermore.

3.  The God who reigns on high,

the great archangels sing,

And “Holy, Holy, Holy” cry,

“Almighty King!”

Who was and is the same,

we worship Thee.

4.  The whole triumphant host

All might and majesty are Thine, and endless praise.

Great Are the Lord’s Works

Psalm 111  Praise the Lord!

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,

in the company of the upright,

in the congregation.

Great are the works of the Lord,

studied by all who delight in them.

Full of splendor and majesty is his work,

and his righteousness endures forever.

He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered;

the Lord is gracious and merciful.

He provides food for those who fear him;

he remembers his covenant forever.

He has shown his people the power of his works,

in giving them the inheritance of the nations.

The works of his hands are faithful and just;

all his precepts are trustworthy;

they are established forever and ever,

to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.

He sent redemption to his people;

he has ccommanded his covenant forever.

Holy and awesome is his name!

10  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;

all those who practice it have a good understanding.

His praise endures forever!

HAVDALAH

[Tune:  Victory in Jesus/revised lyrics]

1. I heard an old, old story

how our great, great God of glory,

descended on a mountain top on the desert of Sinai;

He’s chosen all these mountains,

for some reason why, we wonder,

aside from Sinai there are other famous sacred mounts.

CHORUS:  O climb the highest mountain,

so many men aspire,

to conquer heights beyond the reach of common folk like me,

take courage, faint of heart,

these peaks are worth the climb,

when God calls, He enables so leave all results to Him!

2.  There is another story

about another mountain,

where God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son,

unquestioning this Isaac, just followed his father,

he carried all the wood and asked

“but where’s the sacrifice?”

CHORUS:  O climb your Mount Moriah,

dear Abraham and Isaac,

the same God who appeared on Sinai, He appeared to you,

you’ve passed the highest testing,

you’ve reached your peak, your mountain,

Moriah is forever etched in scriptural history!

3.  There’s yet another mountain

where an ancient priest and king,

Melchizedek of Salem in the book of Bereshith,

this ancient place called ‘Salem’ became ‘Jerusalem,

all pilgrims journey up and sing their psalms, songs of ascent.

CHORUS:  The Temple Mount is there,

where the Glory Cloud once rested,

until it left and lingered on the Mount of Olivet,

this makes us realize,

we have our peaks to conquer,

if God is on the ‘highest mountain’,

let us start our climb!

Shabbat Shalom!

KINDLE THE SABBATH LIGHTS

From the heart of the Creator

Who shows His love for humankind

by preparing a universe

and a perfect environment to sustain all life,

what better message and best proof of Divine LOVE

could humanity expect than

His Created world which, in His Divine providence,

He designed not only as ‘good’ but ‘very good’!

The stage was set

before the the first of humanity entered the scene.

What an all wise Creator is our God of Love,

YHWH,

Blessed be His Holy Name!

With each setting of the life-nurturing and light-giving sun,

the Master Designer of the universe reminds us that a new day begins,

not facing a day’s labor but winding down to a good night’s rest.

And at the end of our six day work-week,

rises the Queen of Days just as His sun sinks in the horizon from our view,

signaling it is time to kindle the Sabbath lights,

and whether alone or together with family or friends,

reflect on the Wisdom of Divine Providence

that fill the days of our lives with messages of love

from the very heart of our great God

YHWH,

Praised be His Holy Name.

And as if all that the Creator had prepared for humankind were not enough,

by His grace and because of His love for us,

created beings He made in His image,

He did not leave us ignorant of His Will,

His Wishes

and His Way

designed for humanity to live with one another,

connected always to Him

through His Tree of Life,

His Revelation in His TORAH,

which He gifted to humanity through His chosen people,

that they might live in peace and harmony in the Land of Promise,

where their way of life would be visible to the nations,

so that Gentiles in all nations would be drawn

to His Way,

and to HIM

Who expressed His Will and Wishes for all.

Truly, our God YHWH, has shown His great love for us,

by blessing us with His TORAH.

Praised be His Holy Name!

Psalm 145

A song of Praise, of David

[revised and combined from ESV and AST]

I will exalt You, my God the King,

and I will bless Your Name forever and ever.

Every day I will bless You and praise Your Name forever and ever.

Great is YHWH, and greatly to be praised,

and His greatness is unsearchable.

Each generation will praise Your deeds to the next

and of Your mighty deeds they will tell;

On the glorious splendor of Your majesty,

and on Your wondrous deeds, I will meditate.

And of the might of Your awesome deeds they will speak,

and Your greatness I shall relate.

They shall pour forth the fame of Your abundant goodness

and shall sing aloud of Your righteousness.

YHWH is gracious and merciful,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

YHWH is good to all, and His mercies are all on His works.

All Your works shall thank You, O YHWH,

and your devout ones will bless You!

They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom

and tell of Your power,

to make known to the children of man Your mighty deeds,

and the glorious splendor of Your kingdom.

Your Kingdom is an everlasting kingdom

and Your dominion endures throughout all generations.

[YHWH is faithful in all His words and kind in all His works.]

YHWH upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down.

The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food in due season.

You open Your hand,

You satisfy the desire of every living thing.

YHWH is righteous in all His ways and kind in all His works.

YHWH is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in Truth.

He fulfills the desire of those who fear Him;

He also hears their cry and saves them.

YHWH protects all who love Him,

but all the wicked He will destroy.

May my mouth declare the praise of YHWH,

and may all flesh bless His Holy Name forever and ever.

“Family is not always blood.

It’s the people in your life who want you in theirs.

the ones who accept you for who you are.

The ones who would do anything to see you smile

and love you no matter what.”

[Name your family members:

parents,

May their names, and all our names, be written in the Book of Life!

May the breath of life from the Source of Life

sustain and nurture our life day by day,

week by week, from Sabbath to Sabbath,

until each of us have fulfilled our function on this earth, in this life.

When we know Him, YHWH, as the One True God,

then we make His Name known to those who, like us,

seek with all their heart and all their mind and all their substance.

They will find Him, just as we have found Him.

Hear O Yisrael, hear O Gentiles of the Nations,

YHWH is LORD, YHWH is One.

YHWH is the Creator, the Revelator on Sinai,

the God of Israel, the God of Sinaites,

God of the Nations,

whether they acknowledge Him or not,

YHWH is GOD!

HAVDALAH

Image from ovalezoval.blogspot.com

[Sonnet 43  was written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning;  we are borrowing her poetry to express our love for YHWH our God, but with revisions to suit a Sinaite’s creed]

How Do I Love Thee?

How do I love Thee? Let me count the ways.

I love Thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach,

when feeling out of sight, for the ends of being and ideal grace.

I love Thee to the level of every day’s most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.

I love Thee freely, as men strive for right;

I love Thee purely, as they turn [to] praise.

I love Thee with the passion put to use in my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.

I love Thee with a love I seemed to [never have lost despite the passing of time];

I love Thee with the breath, smiles, tears, of all my life;

[and if Thou, YHWH so choose to grant me my eternal rest],

I shall but love Thee [even to my] end in this life.

‘Know Me’: The Awesome Self-Description of God

[First posted in 2012.  Has God ever described Himself ?  Would not the Source of LIGHT and spiritual illumination, the Creator,  reveal what He is like and what is His will for the only creature made in “our image” and “likeness”?  He has done so to the custodians of His revelation, whose scriptures are used as prequel to another later reconfiguration of the God of Israel.  Without God’s actual revelation about Himself, man can only guess and in fact create a god after man’s image. . . so let us go back to those foundational scriptures, the Hebrew Bible, the TNK , but please, not the Christian ‘Old Testament’ which is used as “prooftext” for the transformation of an “OT” Unity to an “NT” Trinity.

The book— Restoring Abrahamic Faith—of all books in our Sinai 6000 library, is the first we recommend to anyone in transition or staying within his faith but would like to expand his knowledge of the God Who revealed Himself to Israel and Whose words are recorded in the Hebrew Scriptures.  It should be in everyone’s library; you may order your copy from  www.genesis2000.org as well as in amazon.com.

Abraham trail-blazed the WAY to YHVH.   The Israelites have walked that WAY. From the ancient days to these modern days, YHVH’s WAY has been all but trodden by modern religions which have taught another way, in fact just the opposite way.   To us, Dr. James Tabor through this book helps us retrace our steps back to the ancient path journeyed through by Abraham, Israel’s Patriarchs, Israelites and the Torah-observant remnant among today’s secular Jews.     That WAY leads back to the original revelation on Mt. Sinai, so if you’ve been convicted that you’ve been walking the wrong path,  then it’s time to change direction, take the first step and keep going all the way back to the roots of your faith . . . that would be the Hebrew Scriptures and specifically the first five books of Moses.  Reformatting and highlights added. —Admin1.]

————————-

This is the third of a 3-part series; if you have not read the first two posts, please check out:

Continuing from Part 2:

There is a further important aspect of this revelation of God at Sinai, beyond these theophanic displays of glory and power.  It took place the second time Moses ascended the mountain after the golden calf incident (Exodus 32).

According to the account in Exodus God literally identified Himself to Moses and offered him a remarkable description of His Divine character. God had told Moses that he would send his “angel” or messenger to accompany them further, but would not personally go in their midst because of their rebellion (Exodus 23:20-22; 33:2-3).

Moses had an extraordinary personal relationship with YHVH.  He used to go into a special tent, called the “Tent of Meeting,” that had been pitched just for this purpose (Exodus 33:7-11).  Moses would go in alone, and the cloudy Pillar would stand at the entrance.  Inside this Tent,

“YHVH would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend” (Exodus 33:11).

The actual visible Presence (literally “Face”) of YHVH, in an audible voice, was manifested during this time in the wilderness (see Numbers 12:8 where YHVH spoke with Moses pe ‘el pe,”  or “mouth to mouth”; compare Numbers 14:14).  In one of these “conversations” Moses pled with YHVH to accompany them personally rather than through the agency of an “angel” or messenger.  YHVH was persuaded and agreed (Exodus 33:12-17).

Then Moses asked something more–Oh, let me behold Your Glory (kaved/)” he pled.  He was told that no human can see God face to face, but that he will be allowed to experience some measure of God’s Glory (or direct Presence) as it passes by him—he will behold God’s “back” (Exodus 33:18-23).

Moses went up the mountain and what follows is surely the most significant self-revelation of God in the entire Hebrew Bible.  I will quote the full account:

Now YHVH descended in the cloud and stood with him there,

and proclaimed the NAME יהוה .

YHWH passed before him and proclaimed:

“YHVH, YHVH God

merciful and gracious,

slow to anger,

and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,

keeping steadfast love for thousands,

forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,

by no means clearing the guilty . . . (Exodus 34:5-7).

This is an incredible scene!  Not only does Moses experience the Glory of the Eternal God to the extent that his face glows thereafter, but God personally proclaims His awesome Name, YHVH, and describes His basic nature and character;

merciful and gracious,

slow to anger,

and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

This self-revelation is so significant that it occurs repeatedly in various forms throughout the Hebrew Bible (Nehemiah 9:17; Psalms 86:15; 103:8; 145:8; Joel 2:13; Jonah 4:2).  It becomes a divinely revealed character sketch for YHVH Himself.  Moses refers back to it specifically in Numbers 14:18.

What is so remarkable about this whole Sinai revelation is its absolute concreteness.  When one reads through Exodus and Deuteronomy, our two accounts of these awesome events, there is an unmistakable sense that the texts carry, reflect, and convey.

The notion of God breaking into the normal events of history and actually introducing Himself, in the most objective sense imaginable, comes through so strongly.  One has the sense that God encounters Moses and the people of Israel in a manner quite similar to the way we encounter and come to know our fellow human beings.  The power of these narratives is quite extraordinary in its effect.  They are not simply accounts of a deity acting with miraculous power, but they seem to carry within their content and structure a consistent sense of God’s nature and purposes.

Image from studyinghisword.blogspot.com

This revelation of the NAME of God, which includes an understanding of His character, also carries with it a unique stamp of divine authority.  Constantly in the TORAH, or the Five Books of Moses (Genesis-Deuteronomy) we encounter the phrase,

And YHVH spoke to Moses, saying . . .”

–followed by entire sections of text in which God speaks directly, in the first person.  Likewise in the Prophets, hundreds of times we encounter the key phrase: Thus says YHVH . . . ”  In Hebrew the phrase is most distinct–-koh ‘amar YHVH.  These phrases, followed by the first  person declarations of YHVH Himself reflect a style that no pious Jew would ever dare to fabricate.

Neither the writers of the New Testament nor the Rabbis of the MIshnah and Talmud adopt such a mode of speaking.  Given this unique form of discourse it is clear that the Torah and the Prophets must be the fundamental foundation of any restoration of Biblical Faith. Other sacred texts offer commentary and elaboration, but they should be evaluated in the light of these primary and direct Words of YHVH Himself.

As Isaiah said,

To the TORAH and the TESTIMONY,

if they speak not according to this Word

there is no light in them”

(Isaiah 8:20).

To begin to grasp the concept of the Creator God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God who called Moses, who led Israel out of Egypt with a mighty hand, who revealed Himself at Sinai, speaking face to face to Moses and the people, the God whose Name is יהוה, and whose WAY is summed up in the TORAH—is to begin to understand just who God is.

Fearing, Loving, and Obeying

The Great Commandment, summed up in the Shema, tells us wmust love YHVH our God with all our heart, soul, and  might.

How is it that God would command us to love Him?  Is love something that can be demanded?  When one begins to grasp the greatness and goodness of God, fear and love are the response.  In other words, to truly know YHVH is to fear and love Him.

Psalm 145 puts it well:

Great is YHVH, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable . . . YHVH is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works (vv 3,9).

In this Psalm the precise description of YHVH’s character as revealed to Moses in Exodus 34 is repeated, namely that YHVH is

“gracious and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy” (145:8).

Our love for YHVH arises from our deep realization of His goodness, as expressed toward us and to all creation, and in keeping with His revealed character.  In other words this is what He is like! To know God, as so revealed, is to love Him.  As we truly come to experience and understand God’s nature, we are drawn in love toward Him.

Notice how Moses puts all of these concepts together in his great farewell address to the people of ancient Israel:

And now, Israel

what does YHVH your God require of you,

but to fear YHVH your God,

to walk in all His WAYS,

and to love Him,

to serve YHVH your God with all your heart and with all your soul,

and to keep the commandments of YHVH and His statutes

which I command you today

for your good?

(Deuteronomy 19:12-13)

Here is a very definite, unfolding sequence of responses in coming to truly know YHVH, the Eternal God—as the verbs indicate.  First, and absolutely vital is the fear of YHVH.  Without this fear of God, there is no possible relationship, and certainly no love, Moses goes on to say:

For YHVH your God

is the God of gods

and the Lord of lords,

the great, the mighty,

and the awesome God!

(Deuteronomy 10:17)

These three terms are, in the final analysis, the only legitimate terms we can really use to talk about God.  All other descriptions of God are anthropomorphic, that is they are merely analogies (i.e., God as Father, King, Lord, Warrior, etc.).  The “fear of YHVH” is the beginning, that is, the absolute foundation, of everything else (Psalm 111:10).  To fear God is to have a deep and awesome reverence for Who and What He is. This fear, or absolute awe, is based on the majestic nature of God that is ultimately indescribable and comparable to nothing else.  As David said, His greatness is unsearchable, past finding out.

  • First and foremost, YHVH is the Creator.  The Scriptures declare,

“By the word of YHVH the heavens were made” (Psalm 33:6).

  • YHVH is the ONE who spoke order and life into existence on this planet.  He gives us our very life and breath.
  • Through this awesome creative Force, that is grounded in God our Creator, our planet Earth is a lovely garden rather than a vast empty wasteland, like Mars or Venus.
  • Likewise the “fear” of YHVH rests upon His great and mighty acts in history, particularly at the Exodus from Egypt and at Sinai (see Psalm 136).

This fear of YHVH necessarily results in a concrete response, that is, walking in all His WAYS.  Moses tells the Israelites that the awesome display of power and glory at the giving of the Ten Commandments at Sinai was intended so that

“the fear of Him may remain before you, so that you may not sin.”

This idea of fear or awe involves a profound sense of the righteous power of YHVH, to punish transgression.  As Moses reminds the people of Israel:

“For YHVH your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.” (Deuteronomy 4:24).

By walking in the WAYS of YHVH, which involves the most specific and concrete knowledge, understanding and action, one comes to know, and accordingly, love YHVH—analogous to the way one comes to know and love a fellow human being.

There is no separation between these elements:  fearing, loving, and obeying God.  These are the foundation of an intimate relationship, or “friendship,” with YHVH.

Recall that the Shema begins by speaking of loving God with heart, soul, and might, but immediately adds,

 “and these words,

which I am commanding today,

shall be on your heart”

Ultimately, the way in which a deep fear of YHWH, coupled with a heartfelt following of the WAY of YHVH, results in a profound and total love of God Himself, is something that can be experienced.  Such a relationship is only found as one learns to walk in all His WAYs.

But one has then to ask, just how could a person possibly come to know what the Bible calls the “WAY” of God?

Revisit: TNK” ha satan” vs. OT “Satan”/NT “Devil”

[The beginning of our series on ‘there is NO devil’ —-this was first posted November 26, 2012. revised and rewritten for reposting  two more times in 2014 and 2016, and here’s take 4.   If you haven’t read the whole series, please check our SITEMAP or UPDATED SITE CONTENTS for the complete set of posts proving our contention scripturally.–Admin1.]

————–

Christians have been taught about the devil, named Satan, or Lucifer, supposedly a fallen angel —

  • who took 1/3 of the rebels among the angelic hosts (according to Revelation 12:9),
  • who ‘lord’ it over humankind on earth,
  • appear successful in their evil work,
  • wreaking havoc,
  • causing disasters,
  • controlling souls of fallen mankind,
  • causing disease,
  • possessing clueless innocents,
  • and so on and so forth (Paul’s epistles and the book of Acts and the Gospels all promote these).

No need to rehash what all other articles on this subject in this website have explained at length.

Really folks, think about it:  God allows a ‘power’ on earth to challenge His power and authority, who succeeds in influencing humans and  events to the point of causing them to put the second person of the Trinitarian Godhead to death?

We used to marvel at this thought: wow, to what lengths does God as a human being go to get satisfaction for His own justice . . . pagan myths have this same plot. Definitely it is not of YHWH the Revelator of the Torah!  Humanity and humanity alone is responsible for their choices to remain ignorant of YHWH’s TORAH, to choose to live their way.   There are  enough of self-centered humanity causing suffering and wreaking havoc upon others —human beings,  living creatures,  the environment,  planet earth!  We all contribute in our little way to the destruction of ourselves and our world, whether willfully or ignorantly.

Just look at the fanatic religionists that persecute and terrorize others in the name of their God! And godless humanity acting only for their selfish interests to the detriment of all others.  Blame humanity, not fictitious Satan and his non-existent evil army of demons.

The only Power in heaven and earth is YHWH.   He has allowed only one creature to have freedom of choice knowing this created being made in His image could indeed challenge His authority . . . and that is not ha satan nor the adversary nor the devil or Lucifer. Let us not underestimate man’s capability to choose evil over good, unrighteousness over righteousness, rebel against God and make himself a god.

In the biblical texts presented here from the TNK as well as the New Testament (NT), 2 translations are presented for good reason:

    • one is a Jewish  translation of the original Hebrew scriptures;
    • while the other is a Christian translation of the first part of the Christian Bible retitled “Old Testament” as well as its sequel, the “New” Testament.

Why have we bothered to present both translations, aren’t they the same? No.  When read one after another, placed side by side, you would or should notice the difference in translation from the Hebrew rendering to the Christian rendering.  As we have repeatedly emphasized in our posts on this same topic, the Christian “Old Testament” reads differently in specific places from the Hebrew TNK.

The TNK or Hebrew Scriptures does not promote belief in a fallen angelic being capable of rebelling against the Creator, for indeed could a created being without free will have a choice, much less make a choice to rebel against his Maker?  Only man was given free will to choose.  The NT on the other hand promotes belief in the Devil, traces his origins in “OT” and gives him prominence in NT almost as much as the NT Trinitarian God Himself (themselves?).

The TNK always renders this angelic being as “ha satan” or “the satan” —Hebrew for ‘an adversary’, or ‘the adversary’, or someone who takes on an adversarial role in the specific context, not necessarily a “fallen angel” as Christian translations not only suggest but outright depict.  By the time this “OT” evil character is fully developed in NT,
    • he has become a force, a power, and personality to contend with,
    • challenging God, tempting God the Son,
    • a being described by Paul as head of a heirarchy of demonic spirits who possess and oppress people,
    • and in Revelation, the  ARCH ENEMY and his ilk who will fight the hosts of angels in the formidable battle of Armageddon
    • but will meet their predictable end in the place prepared
      • for them
      • and all evil people
      • or those who did not accept the Christian God-Son Jesus as lord and savior.

As you read through the 2 translations, please notice how the TNK’s “an adversary” or “the adversary” or “the satan”  is rendered in the Christian OT and NT merely as. . . “Satan” and ponder the implications of the difference in rendering.

    • one is a Jewish  translation of the original Hebrew scriptures;

What’s good and bad about religion?

[First posted in 2012.   Sinaites are not ‘down’ on religion as some of our critics mistakenly think; this post explains our position:  we are not a religion;  we are a way of thinking which leads to a way of life based on what we have accepted as YHWH’s guidelines for living for all humanity, not just for Israel, and that is the TORAH life.  This adds to the many articles we have written about our perspective.—Admin1]

Sinaites define “religion” as a man-initiated attempt to relate to an unknown supernatural power.   Religion is human-sourced, based on man’s philosophical musings, speculations, logic, conclusions leading to beliefs and convictions about a supernatural entity whom man wants to know but cannot see or prove, but feel a spiritual link with.

This man-initiated attempt might begin with—

  • simply recognizing that there is a higher power,
  • then move on to seeking to know him,
  • and further to defining and naming him;
  • and determining ways to please, placate, worship him;
  • and finally to living according to how man thinks this god requires him to live.

All beliefs in a deity might loosely fall under “religion.”  In this sense, religion is good, because at least there is an acknowledgment of God’s existence followed by accountability to God.  It should make a difference in how a believer in a god lives his life on earth, how he uses his time, opportunities, giftings, etc.

[AST] Proverbs 9:10-11

“The beginning of wisdom is fear of  HASHEM [YHWH]

and [the beginning of] understanding is knowledge of the sacred.

For through me your days will be increased,

and they will increase years of life for you.

 If you have become wise,

you have become wise for your own good,

and if you have scoffed,

you alone will bear [responsibility].”

Some people end their speculation with an awareness of God and go no further.  Others progress to the next step—how do I get to know this Being, this Entity?

The normal route resorted to is—they turn to existing religious sects, small groupings or communities, persuaded that the leaders know more than they do about “the way” to God. There are many institutionalized religions that have world-wide reach and influence, one doesn’t have to stick his neck out to join any of them; they’re out to go after any seeker.

The goal of a God-seeker is simply to know God if that is at all possible.  It starts as a personal quest but as one starts relating to others with the same objective, they start connecting with other seekers. Before you know it, they form fellowships, religious communities, then institutionalize into churches.  Each tends to have an exclusive claim to truth and to being in the right religion as the only way to God.

Image from www.ghanacelebrities.com

History has a sad record of the evils of religion, so that’s the BAD part of religion. It tends to promote self-righteousness, intolerance, exclusivism, bias towards others of different faiths, tunnel vision, persecution, fanaticism, to name a few.

The Crusades and the Inquisition all but eliminated any opposition or challenge to the beliefs espoused by Catholicism.  Cultic leaders are able to influence their flock to practice polygamy, isolate themselves in communities to wait for the end of the world and worse, cultic leaders like Jim Jones was able to delude his flock towards mass suicide. Religious fanatics go so far as burning themselves in public for a cause and in the case of terrorists, suicide bombers are able to cause as much death and destruction to others.

If there is a sure turnoff for the agnostics and atheists of the world, that would be religion and all the bad it does, ironically and unfortunately,  “in the Name of God.”

So where does a sincere God-seeker/Truth-seeker turn to, if not religion?

There IS another way:  try the original revelation of God . . . that would be the Sinai revelation recorded in the five books attributed to Moses—the Torah.   Get to know the  God Who revealed Himself, His Name, and His will for all humanity.

The goal is relationship with the One True God, not religion. With this relationship is a bonus, a way of life, Torah, “instructions” on how to live in community, whether Jew or Gentile.   Pore through the Scriptures, both the “Old” and the “New” and look for any commandment that says “join a religion”, or even “join MY religion” . . . you will not find it.  What you will find is “obey my commandments”.

And now, Israel

[Mixed Multitude, Gentiles among you]

what does YHVH your God require of you,

but to fear YHVH your God,

to walk in all His WAYS,

and to love Him,

to serve YHVH your God with all your heart and with all your soul,

and to keep the commandments of YHVH and His statutes

which I command you today

for your good?

(Deuteronomy 19:12-13)

For YHVH your God

is the God of gods

and the Lord of lords,

the great, the mighty,

and the awesome God!

(Deuteronomy 10:17)

Valentine – Who was he, why does he deserve a day named after him, and does anybody really care?

[Resurrecting an old post circa 2015, on the occasion celebrated every February 14. Who started the trend that has gotten commercialized just like Christmas?  Find out.—-Admin1.]

——————————

How many people know about and actually celebrate the “Feasts” of YHWH commanded in Leviticus 23? Probably a total hardly comparable to how many know and actually celebrate Valentine’s Day every February 14.

Year after year, people celebrate this day not knowing how it all started, or who was this person named “Valentine,”  and what did he ever do to deserve a day in the month of February?

It’s a day characterized by hearts, flowers, chocolates, a romantic night out, Cupid, Eros, perhaps engagement or better yet, marriage proposal; do any of these symbols relate to Mr. Valentine?

Here’s an article that might come as a surprise to most people who have the mistaken notion that this person “Valentine” was some kind of a romantic ‘fella’.  Look at the picture of “Saint” Valentine below and see if you feel inclined to be lovey-dovey [nope, not Snoopy, the next photo below him].

The point of featuring this is that the whole world continues year after year to celebrate this day, ever wonder who REALLY benefits from it?  Well, for one all ‘lovers’ who don’t need a special occasion like this to commemorate their love for one another. For another, neglected wives and girlfriends who hope to be remembered at least one day out of the year.  And finally,  this is most likely the KEY to all the mindless celebrating: it is simply another occasion for commercialism, for businesses to make a killing . . .in this case, florists, chocolatiers, restaurants, greeting cards.  ‘Bah humbug’ indeed, would say curmudgeonly Scrooge . . . but why be a killjoy when people are simply having fun even if nobody could care less how it all began,  can’t we just live and let live?

Well, time to be informed, like it or not!  Here’s some background, courtesy of an agnostic respecter of all religions and traditions, (credit him for true religious tolerance, definitely kinder than most religionists!).  This FYI source is Notre Dame University.

————————————————————–

Valentine was a priest in third-century Rome who helped Christians who were being persecuted for their faith. One of the services he offered was to perform marriages for Christians during this persecution, which led to his patronage of young people, those in love, and happy marriages. Valentine was discovered and arrested.  Authorities threatened him with torture unless he renounced his faith.  He refused and was beaten with clubs, then beheaded. He died on this date in the year 269.  Legend has it that before he was beheaded, he converted his jail guard by healing the man’s daughter, restoring sight to her and writing her a note, which he signed, “From your Valentine.”

In the Middle Ages, his feast was connected with the tradition of courtly love. Much of his story is unreliable, so the official calendar for liturgy for the universal Church uses this date to commemorate Sts. Cyril and Methodius. St. Valentine  still remains on the calendar for local veneration in Rome, however.

Archeologists have uncovered a Roman catacomb and church that was built in memory of St. Valentine. He was remembered with great honor by early Christians and was included in the saints recalled in the Mass in some places. His relics rest in the reliquary chapel in the Basilica and his image is used here with permission from Catholic.org.

“St. Valentine,

patron of young people,

those in love,

and happy marriages,

pray for us!”

—————————-

S6K Comment:  If Saint Valentine were like Almighty God who is omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent and could hear and actually answer all the prayers of couples in love and married couples, the pray-ors to him might indeed get answers but . . . alas, no human dead or alive is all-powerful like the One True God YHWH who can hear prayers all at the same time but will presumably answer only those prayers directed to Him, don’t you think?

“Sorry, right address, wrong addressee.”  Should the One True God answer prayers addressed to other gods and perpetuate the wrong belief that there are non-gods who exist and who actually have power to hear and answer prayers intended for them? You see, it’s like addressing someone whose attention you’re calling, but until you say the correct name, that person won’t know you’re calling him.  Mothers do it sometimes, going through names of her kids and the child pays attention only when he hears his name.

One might reason out, ‘how many really know the True God, much less know His Name?’  Think of it this way: when a law enforcer issues you a speeding ticket and you explain you didn’t know the speed limit, what might he say? ” Ignorance of the law is no excuse.”   Is there any reason in this day and age not to know any information available IF ONE TRULY CARES TO KNOW? Actually, if you simply read His TORAH, you will know Him and the Name He reveals . . . but for those with no access to such information, He probably will accommodate prayers He recognizes as addressed to Him, even if it’s directed “to Whom it may concern.”  Guessing.

Might this kind of devotion to a dead saint fall under the sin of idolatry, in violation of the 2nd commandment?  Ditto with prayers to all other “saints” and anyone else who is not the One True God, no? Why not just pray for yourself,  straight to the True God who hears, and not ask a dead saint to pray for you? You see, no intermediary is needed to reach this God of the TNK; how do we know, He says so, find out for yourself.

Excuse us for riding on this occasion to share love for neighbor with love for God, as our February Sabbath liturgy has endeavored to redirect our attention to the Divine Source of unconditional love.

So here’s a Sinaite’s unsolicited advice:

 Celebrate? OK!

Pray to dead people even if canonized as “saint”,  NOT OK!

Revisit: The “I” in “Image” vs. the “I” in “Idolatry”

Image from lylemook.com

Image from lylemook.com

[First posted in 2014. This article makes us rethink our understanding of the word ‘idolatry’.  In antiquity, it was simply the sin of worshipping another, whether a god of one’s imagination or anything that takes the place of the True God. What did they know, they were ignorant until the True God started revealing Himself.  Were they excused?  Wouldn’t you be if there was no way to know the One True God since He had not yet revealed Himself except perhaps in His created world? And even so, one would simply be guessing.

Think another way:  from biblical times on to our day, worship may not even be the issue at all.

  • What or who takes pre-eminence in my life?
  • Who makes the decision —
    • to worship whom or what,
    • or not to worship at all,
    • particularly in this day and age of the worldwideweb
    • when there is no more reason and no excuse to be ignorant of any subject
    • except by choice?

The title gives the clue.—Admin1].

———————-

Forget the New Testament teaching that every person born in this world is tainted with “original sin” inherited from the first couple in Eden; hence everyone is helpless and cannot save himself, that’s why he needs the Christian Savior. That faulty teaching removes personal responsibility and personal choice from man, making him hopeless in utter depravity and incapable of making right choices. It ignores the truth that man, being the only created being endowed with free will, is made in the image of God—the “I” in Image that endows him with the ability to make Godlike choices despite  the disobedience of the first couple for which only the first couple is accountable, not their progeny.

We’ve written articles about this subject so if you’re so inclined please check out the following posts:

Pay close attention to what is taught in  the Hebrew Scriptures (renamed Old Testament which is supposedly the foundation of the New Testament).  The Tanakh/Tanach teaches that man is born with two inclinations:

  • one that leans toward choosing to do Right,
  • another that leans toward choosing the opposite of Right.

To quote from our post:

In every individual there is that balance of the evil inclination, yetzer hara as the Jewish interpreters term it, with the good inclination.  It is all and always a matter of individual choice.

Contrary to Christian teaching, we are not born condemned to nonexistent hell because we inherited original sin from Adam and Eve; each individual is  free to choose between the two inclinations within him/her-self that he/she constantly faces and struggles with. The potential to do good, to do what is right, balances the potential to do just the opposite.

The “I, me and myself” tends to predominate unless it has been conditioned and disciplined or coerced to submit to another.

As long as that power to choose has not been stripped from us by another authority, we are each individually responsible for each and every choice that we make.

What or who determines what is right? Who else but the God of Righteousness who is also the Revelator on Sinai, the God of Israel, the God of the Hebrew Scriptures.

“We are fully endowed to be able to know the truth. All we must do is make the effort,” is a timely reminder from Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski.

[EF] Deuteronomy/Davarim 30

15 See, I set before you today
life and good, and death and ill:
16 in that I command you today
to love YHVH your God,
to walk in his ways and to keep his commandments, his laws and his regulations, that you may stay-alive and become-many
and YHVH your God may bless you
in the land that you are entering to possess.
17 Now if your heart should face-about, and you do not hearken,
and you thrust-yourself-away and prostrate yourselves to other gods, and serve them,
18 I announce to you today
that perish, you will perish,
you will not prolong days on the soil that you are crossing the Jordan to enter, to possess.
19 I call-as-witness against you today the heavens and the earth:
life and death I place before you, blessing and curse;
now choose life, in order that you may stay-alive, you and your seed,
20 by loving YHVH your God,
by hearkening to his voice and by cleaving to him,
for he is your life and the length of your days,
to be settled on the soil
that YHVH swore to your fathers, to Avraham, to Yitzhak and to Yaakov,
to give them!

Micah 6:8

It hath been told thee, O man, what is good,

and what YHWH doth require of thee:

only to do justly,

and to love mercy,

and to walk humbly with thy God.

Free will is a gift from God, given only to humankind.  The angelic spirits were not endowed with freedom of choice, surprised?  (So no possibility of fallen angels; don’t ever say “the devil made me do it.”).   How privileged indeed is man to be made in the ‘image” of God, the only Being who exercises free will, that is,  until He decided to gift it to humankind.

Question:  is there anything the Almighty God cannot do?

Answer: Yes, only that which He restrains HIMself from doing . . . and one would be— never to interfere with nor violate man’s free will.  He could surround man with external influences to help man make the right choice;  He could also allow man to be tempted to test him as He did with the first couple but ultimately that choice is still for man to make.

So the “I” in Image chooses to do right.

———————

Rabbi Abraham J. Twerski elaborates (Growing Each DayAish.com):

He created him [Adam] in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).

Since God is not corporeal, the term “image of God” obviously refers to humanity’s capacity for Godliness, i.e. to share in the Divine attributes of rational thinking, spirituality, sanctity, creativity – attributes that distinguish us from all other living things. . .

The serpent seduced Adam and Eve to eat of the forbidden Tree of Knowledge by convincing them that doing so would enable them to become God-like (ibid. 3:5). Why did they succumb to this argument, since they already knew that they were created betzelem Elokim, with the capacity to be God-like?

That unique endowment did not disappear from the so-called “fall”, it is still in every human being born since the first man/woman; neither is it overpowered except when man chooses to give in to the other inclination that provides the balance, since to exercise freedom of the will there should be two equal competing influences within as well as without.

————————-

If the “I” in the “Image” tends toward Godliness, to doing what is right; the “I” in idolatry, leans toward doing just the opposite.

In essence, idolatry is the choice to follow another “god” that is not the One True God, YHWH.

Ponder this:

  •  Who makes the choice to follow someone or something other than God?  “I”, me, myself.
  • So when “I’ make the choice, “I” am guilty of idolatry.
  •  How so?  “I” follow my inclination to disobey God, therefore “I” make myself some kind of a god, one that competes with God.
  • In effect, when “I” decide to drop the True God and replace Him with an idol,

—-“I” am not really worshipping that idol,

—-“I” have dared to defy God and by doing so,

—-“I” have made myself the competing idol with God.

Rabbi Matthew Berkowitz in A Taste of Torah considers “habitual sinful behavior” as “idolatry of another sort” and he is right.

  • When “I” indulge in habitual sinful behavior,
  • any sin that “I” keep doing over and over,
  • who is the “I” serving?
  • I, me and myself, nobody else.
  • “I” serve my interest first and foremost, over and above anyone else,
  • over and above God Himself!

Who is God competing with in my life?

 “I”, me!

“I” have become my idol.
