The WAY of YHVH – 5 – TORAH FAITH for Non-Jews?

[First posted in 2012.

Non-Jews . . . Gentiles like ourselves, Sinaites, who have discovered the TRUTH that there is only ONE GOD whose Name is YHVH, Creator, Revelator on Sinai, the God who chose the nation of Israel to be His light to the gentiles—what are we now to do about this discovery?

Each person has to make a decision, stay where you are, or change direction. It is not an easy decision to make. You go against a lifetime of Christian influence [entrenched within yourself] and a tidal wave of opposition from Christians.  But what little loss is that compared to the gain—the One True God YHVH? How can that be a “loss”? It places you in the historical entry point into the promised land at the end of the Israel’s wandering in the wilderness, when Joshua challenges the second generation who were born and survived those 40 years:

If it is evil in your eyes to serve YHVH, choose today whom you will serve:  the gods your forefathers served across the River, or the gods of the Amorite in whose land you dwell.  But as for me and my house, we will serve YHVH!   (Joshua 24:15).

Continuing our resource sharing of the book that played a major part in our decision to leave Christianity and embrace the original Biblical faith, here is the final installment in “The Way,” Chapter Two of James Tabor’s Restoring Abrahamic Faith, which gives a blueprint, a map, guidelines for those who are on the verge of deciding to take on the challenge to explore a totally new and different direction from what they had previously known.  It is unsettling, to put it mildly, to face that fork on the road, so James Tabor offers help on how take that first step.
Slightly edited and condensed for website and better readability; also, presented in 3 installments with added subtitles and for those sequels, here are the links:

JAMES TABOR  on Abrahamic Faith

To restore ABRAHAMIC FAITH is to advocate what might be called “TORAH Faith for all nations” (Isaiah 2:3).  If I were to choose a slogan of BIBLICAL FAITH, this would be it.

Although the TORAH was given once for all by Moses to Israel at Sinai, it is essentially universal, that is, intended for all humankind. It is to the TORAH we must go, and from the TORAH we must derive the essentials of the Faith.

I find it useful to call this Faith “Abrahamic,” since the very mission and meaning of Abraham’s call, and the subsequent Covenant with Israel, was that all nations would be blessed and drawn into this universal PLAN (Genesis 12:1-3). In other words, any view of Abraham, or of the Jewish mission, or of the TORAH, which ignores these universal aspects is wrong-headed from the start.

Israel was given the gift of the TORAH, not to bottle up and keep to themselves, but to teach the world, through example and proclamation, that eternal WAY. The entire nation of Israel is called a “kingdom of priests” for this very reason (Exodus 19:6).

The primary function of the priesthood is to teach:

For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge, and people should seek the TORAH from his mouth; for he is the messenger of YHVH of Hosts (Malachi 2:7).

Just as the people of Israel and Levitical priests to instruct them, the entire nation is to function as priest to the world. Rabbi Elijah Benamozegh (1823-1900) brilliantly expounded this concept of Israel’s mission to the nations in his classic work, Israel and Humanity, a book well worth reading to this day. All the Prophets declare that in the future the choosing of Israel, and its mission as the Covenant people, will find ultimate fulfillment when “the TORAH goes forth from Jerusalem” to all the nations of the world (Isaiah 2:3-4).

What is involved in TORAH Faith for non-Jews?

Judaism has never expected that Gentiles are required to convert to Judaism, or “become Jewish.” Such an idea lacks both Biblical foundation and practical wisdom. Israel is to serve as a priest to all nations, which does not mean that all nations are to “become priests.”

Practically speaking, the Jewish people have developed, through their written and oral traditions, a particular    understanding of TORAH observance that is not easily or directly applicable to non-Jews. It is an entire way of life, framed in a rich culture that involves literally every aspect of daily life and religious practice. Few non-Jews would be comfortable with such a drastic transformation of cultural identity. Nonetheless, there are those among the Gentiles who seem to experience an almost irresistible pull toward Judaism. Some Rabbis say that such individuals have a Jewish “nishamah” or soul, either as “lost” Jews or from the “Lost Tribes,” exiled in the 7th century B.C.E.

It is not uncommon for such Gentiles to discover, with a bit genealogical research, that they have fairly recent Jewish ancestors. For those Gentiles who do choose to formally convert to Judaism, the door has always been open. But neither Judaism nor the TORAH has ever specified formal “conversion” in order for one to have a full and valid relationship with God, including full participation in the PLAN to see the Kingdom of God realized on earth. This is an internal, personal, and individual matter, and cuts across all the religious and cultural issues normally associated with “religious affiliation” and “labels.”

Universal – Noahide Laws before the Sinai Revelation

As a bare beginning, Jewish tradition teaches that all humankind, as “children of Noah,” (B’nai Noach) is obligated to follow the Noahide Laws.

The TORAH was given to Moses at Sinai, but obviously, from Adam to Moses there was a basic standard of righteousness for humankind. Traditionally there are seven Noahide laws or commandments (mitzvot): prohibitions against —-
  • idolatry,
  • blasphemy,
  • murder,
  • sexual immorality,
  • theft, and
  • cruelty to animals (including eating blood),
  • along with the positive admonition to pursue mishpat or injustice.
These “basics” are derived from the early chapters of Genesis, especially chapters 1-9. The Talmud elaborates them, and according to traditional Judaism they become the minimum standards of ethical conduct for Gentiles.  Actually these “Seven” are more than single commandments, they are headings or categories, under which are grouped a whole mass of related TORAH legislation applicable to Gentiles. In other words, one must go to the TORAH to fully define what is adultery, theft, murder, idolatry, and so forth.

Gentile God-fearers

 In the ancient wo

rld we have evidence of Gentiles who attended the synagogue and were attracted to Judaism, but stopped short of formal conversion. They are called “God-fearers,” and are often mentioned in the book of Acts in the New Testament. They had turned from idolatry and taken up these basic Laws of Noah, and possibly other observances of Judaism.

It is these Noahide Laws that lie behind the crucial decision made by Ya’akov (James), brother of Jesus, at the Nazarene Council (Acts 15:19-21). Much Paul’s ethical instruction to his Gentile followers is based, point-by-point, on this Noahide Code (see the issues that run through 1 Corinthians 5-10). This Noahide Code is a minimal step, a bare beginning, for non-Jews who wish to have acceptance from, and share fellowship with, TORAH observant Jews. It might be likened to a basic “clean up operation” for those who are turning from idolatry, paganism, and misguided ways of our secular society.

These seven commandments, even when expanded into broader categories, do not cover the full range of the WAY of YHVH for humankind as reflected in TORAH. Most who begin serious TORAH study end up wanting to go much deeper into the texts and traditions. Certainly all of the TEN WORDS, including remembering the Sabbath and honoring father and mother are a basic and irreducible part of TORAH Faith.

but our lyrics revision reflect our Sinaite creed.

Imitation is the best compliment;

so we salute the composers  of Christian hymns;

no doubt they were inspired by the God

they love and serve,

just as we are inspired by the God

we have chosen to follow,

to serve and to worship:

[Original Tune:  Bread of the World, Revised Lyrics]

LIGHT of the world,  dispel the darkness

that makes men blind who see You not,

There’s unbelief, there’s skepticism,

‘There is no God’, or so they say.

Your LIGHT shines bright to all believers

who see You, listen to Your Voice,

You speak Your Word through all the ages,

from Sinai to our seeking hearts.

[Original Tune:  All Glory, Praise and Honor, Revised Lyrics]

1.  All glory, praise and honor,

Yahuwah God our King!

To Whom our hymns of worship

with loud hosannas sing!

Thou art the God of Israel,

of all humanity,

Who learn Thy guidelines in Thy Word,

believe and worship Thee.

2.  The company of angels

keep praising Thee no end;

We join their mighty chorus,

our love to Thee we send!

Thy chosen people Israel,

Thy firstborn son Thou led

As fire by night and cloud by day,

with manna they were fed.

3.  To Thee they brought their offerings,

they sang their hymns of praise.

Like them we sing our praises,

our heartfelt thanks we raise.

Thou art the Source of all our joy,

the source of our delight.

We thank Thee for Thy Sabbath rest,

the day when we’re most blest!

Psalm 119:  1-16

1 Blessed are those whose way is blameless,

who walk in the law of the Lord!

2  Blessed are those who keep his testimonies,

who seek him with their whole heart,

3  who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways!

4  You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently.

5  Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes!

6 Then I shall not be put to shame,

having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.

7  I will praise you with an upright heart,

when I learn your righteous rules.

8  I will keep your statutes;do not utterly forsake me!

9  How can a young man keep his way pure?

By guarding it according to your word.

10  With my whole heart I seek you;

let me not wander from your commandments!

11  I have stored up your word in my heart,

that I might not sin against you.

12  Blessed are you, O Lord;

teach me your statutes!

13  With my lips I declare

all the rules of your mouth.

14  In the way of your testimonies I delight

as much as in all riches.

15  I will meditate on your precepts

and fix my eyes on your ways.

16  I will delight in your statutes;

I will not forget your word.

[Original Tune:  Give Thanks/Revised Lyrics]

Give thanks for this Sabbath day,

Give thanks for this time, we pray,

Give thanks because He’s given

all we need, day to day,

Give thanks for our family,

for spouse, for our children dear,

for special friends we’ve chosen,

all are gifts from His Heart!

And so let us celebrate our joys,

let us celebrate our life,

as we sip our wine, partake of this bread;

all these are sweet blessings from our GOD,

what an awesome loving LORD,

and YAHUWAH is His Name,

praise His Name!

Give Him thanks.

Heed His Word.

Live His Life.

PRAYER

Lord of Life, God of Generations,

You have blessed us with beloved family–

[Name them]

parents,

siblings,

spouse, children,

extended kin,

and special people.

As we partake of this bread and drink this wine,

symbols of Your provisions

and the joy we derive from celebrating Your Sabbath,

We remember them all—

and thank You for intertwining our lives

with one another,

and with others not of our family:

acquaintances, friends, fellow workers,

neighbors, employers, employees,

all of whom are blessings to our life,

as we endeavor to be blessings to them as well,

according to your mandate

to “love our neighbor”—

everyone who does not fit into

“I, me, and myself”

is my “neighbor”.

To LIFE, L’Chaim, Mabuhay!

[Original Tune:  Gracious Spirit, fill thou me/revised lyrics]

1.  Lord Yahuwah, lead the way,

through each moment, each new day.

Help me navigate my way, as I study, learn, and pray,

Thank You for Your Torah life, may I live my life Your way.

2.  Truthful prophets of my God, how can I as truthful be?

And with wisdom speak as clear, may my Torah mind appear,

Followed with good deeds to all, may Thy Truth in me not fall.

3.  Torah Words inspire my soul,  make my actions bare to all.

That my life might speak as loud as the words that make me proud,

Words about Your mighty deeds, may I sow Life-giving seeds.

4.  God invisible to me,  I know You though I can’t see.

Your Creation testifies, Israel still verifies,

Torah is Your legacy, meant for all humanity.

The Devil is NOT in the details because . . .

. . . the devil does not exist except in the minds of those who believe he does!

But yeah,  understandably, that’s only an expression to mean:

“The details of a plan, while seeming insignificant,

may contain hidden problems that threaten

its overall feasibility.”

[from  What’s the meaning of the phrase ‘The devil is in the details’?]

Now, just think:  how does an expression like that become quotable, well, for those who’ve heard of it and actually use it?  Have you, dear reader, used it yourself?  And if so, do you know its origin?

If the answer is no (and even if it’s a yes), for the benefit of the clueless among us,  here’s a background-er:

—————————–

What’s the origin of the phrase ‘The devil is in the details’?

The devil is in the details

The source of the proverb :

‘The devil is in the details’ is often attributed to the German/American architect Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe. This is almost certainly a misattribution.

The expression derives from an earlier German proverb – “Der liebe Gott steckt im detail”,  which translates as ‘God is in the detail’.

Mies Van Der Rohe is also associated with this earlier form but, although he may have used it, there’s no evidence that he was the first to do so.

In the migration of the phrases,  an ‘s’ was added – the earlier form is usually ‘God is in the detail’; the later form is more commonly ‘the devil is in the details’.

‘The devil is in the details’ only came into common use in the 1990s (Van Der Rohe died in 1969) and the earliest citation of it that I’ve found in print is in Richard Mayne’s explanation of the workings of the European Union – The Community of Europe, 1963:

On the principle that ‘the devil is in the details’, what should have been a merely formal occasion developed into a debate about the Community’s official languages and the site of its headquarters.

The phrase might have been tailor-made for negotiations between European Union countries, which are renowned for their labyrinthine and hair-splitting attention to detail.

—————————–

Okay,  all that background to repost an item included in

03/31/18 – Well hell!  Pardon the expression but it’s apropos for this update.

For a very short while there, we thought that the Vicar of Christ –  Pope Francis –  finally awakened to the same truth that Sinai 6000 has been ‘preaching’ in our website:  that hell and its ringleader the Devil, AKA Satan/Lucifer — do not exist except in the New Testament.

Yes indeed, they’re alive and well in  the Gospels, actually interacting and persecuting God/Man Jesus through their clueless human-cohorts (Roman gentiles and Jewish religious leaders), as well as in the Epistles of the apostle Paul,  one of which even goes into detail of the hierarchy of devils/demons/evil spirits and their specific assignments on planet earth.  Whaaatttt???

—————————–

Check out these newsbits for this shortlived papal declaration:

Well hell (again), should anybody be  “freaking out” from this biblical TRUTH?  Hell NO,  everybody who’s been afraid of the devil who’s supposedly “in the details”  should feel LIBERATED from mental and spiritual bondage to this LIE that a creature like him even exists!

Now, if the Devil did exist, he would be the source of this lie that he exists, but alas, to him is attributed a host of wrong and mistaken practices (exorcism, devil worship, blame-game “the devil made me do it” from  mis-reading and mis-interpretation of Genesis 3, and the whole occultic culture, etc. etc.).

And here’s our take on ‘idolatry’ of the Pope:

And if anyone needs to understand who is the “serpent” in Genesis 3, here’s our explanation:

Reprise:  GOD is in the DETAIL[S]; He is omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent, omni-everything else! Who the hell could believe otherwise?

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life – Proverbs 11:30

Source: jewishlearningworks.org

Source: jewishlearningworks.org

[First posted on June 7, 2012.

The Hebrew Scriptures often communicate divine truths in fictional as well as historical narratives.  We read story after story about God in conversation or interacting with men from Genesis through Deuteronomy. Teachings, instructions and laws as well as examples are embedded in these stories.  That is why they are so much easier to grasp and remember than theological treatises full of abstract words.   Many stories follow one after the other so that sometimes, readers do not know how to distinguish what are historical narratives as well as who are historical figures as opposed to  prototypes, archetypes, metaphors, parables.

Christians/Messianics tend to read the bible literally while Jews warn against doing so, teaching instead how to learn to distinguish literal from figurative, to recognize when the language switches from one to the other.  Easy for Jews to do that, they read in the original biblical language of Hebrew while we read it in translation.

To 21st century readers, the Torah sometimes reads like a fairy tale told with childlike simplicity. Many find it difficult to relate to details that are not in contemporary experience. For instance, the story about Adam and Eve, the talking serpent, 2 trees.  The better way to approach biblical narratives is to expect both literal and figurative within the same story, and learn to determine when you’re moving from one to the other.

We won’t try to elaborate on that rule of thumb here, but try applying it on verses that stump you. In this story of Adam and Eve, think of it as a way of explaining how the first man and woman violated a commandment which resulted in some consequences for them.  That the commandment involves a forbidden tree, the name of which immediately gives us a clue that the story is figurative; we see no such tree in this world but we can relate to the temptation to go against a divine commandment and suffer consequences.  The other tree mentioned in the story, we also don’t recognize among tree species; however its very name points to a quality and quantity of life if we partake of its fruit.

Here’s an interesting perspective offered by a Jewish website that teaches Torah living as well as how to read and understand Hebrew. –Admin1].

————————–

What will give us eternity?

The tree of life appears in two aspects in the Hebrew Bible.

For me until now, as a Biblical Hebrew teacher, I was thinking only about the first one that is found in the Garden of Eden’s story. The eternity is the option to live forever, the option of immortality, the outcome of eating two fruits, the forbidden one and the one that we couldn’t reach.

When you read the story in Genesis 2-3,  the tree of life is not the hero.  We can find the tree of life three times in the story.

The first time is in Genesis 2:9:

“וַיַּצְמַח יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים, מִן-הָאֲדָמָה, כָּל-עֵץ נֶחְמָד לְמַרְאֶה, וְטוֹב לְמַאֲכָל–וְעֵץ הַחַיִּים, בְּתוֹךְ

הַגָּן, וְעֵץ, הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע.”

“And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”

The tree of life is found between two trees, The one Adam could eat and the one that he couldn’t.  The only information about this tree we can assume is its location in the garden.  He is not an outsider;  he is inside the garden without any doubt.

Rashi mentioned in his commentary that the tree is the middle of the garden. Ramban added that the tree of knowledge was also located there and that the tree of life has fruits that gave long life and not eternity.   One of the sages of Israel said in Genesis  Rabbah that the tree could live for 500 years  (the long life is actually for the tree and not for the man!)

When the story ends the tree appears one more time as written in Genesis 3:22-24

“And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.”

Here it states clearly that if the man would eat from the tree, he will live forever and would be as G-d and as his angels.  Therefore, G-d prevents man of two things: the attendance in the garden itself and the arrival to the tree of life.

However, always the question of how can we live forever is asked.
At the same time, when Plato wrote his beautiful words and fables, sat down another wise man, according to the tradition that was Solomon, and wrote the same idea in the book of Proverbs.

In Proverbs 3:15 it is written:

“עֵץ-חַיִּים הִיא, לַמַּחֲזִיקִים בָּהּ; וְתֹמְכֶיהָ מְאֻשָּׁר”

“She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her, and happy is every one that holdest her fast”

‘She’ is the wisdom and the one who holds it is ‘a tree of life’.

From that verse, I understood that the wisdom has some kind of eternity. When you will learn Biblical Hebrew, you will see that is the difference between the definite article and the indefinite article.  However, in this verse, it doesn’t matter– the eternity remains!
The same idea, by the way, appears also in Proverbs 11:30

“פְּרִי-צַדִּיק, עֵץ חַיִּים…”

“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life…”

When a person is wise and righteous he lives forever, even if he is not with us.   His ideas, his actions and his behavior were, are and will be a model to us!

A Sinaite’s Liturgy – 4th Sabbath in May

[Why two Sabbath lights instead of one or more,  ever wonder?  Here’s a post that attempts to answer this Jewish tradition:

https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/484176/jewish/Why-Light-Two-or-More-Shabbat-Candles.htm

So the next Q  is: why are Sinaites being mere copycats instead of devising our own distinctive way of celebrating the Biblical Sabbath?   A:  Sinaites have adopted the kindling of two lights on our Sabbath celebration–emulating the Jewish tradition of celebrating erev Shabbat in the family setting—but adding our own interpretation of “why two lights” indeed:

  • The first candle is our way of acknowledging Israel as the source of our knowledge of and belief/faith in the One True God-Creator, everything the TORAH narrates about Israel and their God.
  • The second candle is representative of Gentiles of the world (which includes us, Sinaites and all other non-Jews), whose enlightenment about the One True God through His Revelation to Israel has come to us from the Sacred Scriptures of  Torah-observant Israel.  The Torah is the ultimate and only authority we recognize as the source of our belief and way of life.

So actually, the better image should be:

  • one candle already lit representing Israel and,
  • the second candle is lit by the first, representing Gentiles of the world who have come to believe and worship the God Who chose Israel to be His ‘Light to the Gentiles’.

So, two Sabbath lights for Israel and Gentiles of the world,  the Sinaite’s metaphor.–Admin1.]

two-burning-wax-candles-tied-450w-1251729628Blessed are You, YHWH our God,

King of the Universe,

Who commanded Your chosen nation, Israel,

to set aside one day out of seven,

to rest from their labors,

this nation in this day and age,

continues to be the Sabbath-keeper

on the True Sabbath Day,

as ordained by You,

Oh YHWH,

Lord of the Sabbath,

God of Israel, God of the Nations.

As Gentile-believers in You,  O God of Israel,

we believe we are grafted into Israel!

We relate to the generation of Gentiles

who left Egypt with the Israelites in ‘the Exodus’,

and who stood among the Israelites

when Your Commandments were given to them

through Your Servant Moses,

in the desert of Sinai.

We relate to those Gentiles

who were not of Israel

but related to Israel

and stood with Israel

before You,

the God Who spoke Your Law from Mount Sinai.

Just like that first generation of Gentiles among Israelites,

We– 21st century Gentiles—

are fortunate and blessed to have come to know You

through the Scriptures of Israel,

and through the continuing witness

of Your chosen people from their inception:

a people formed by You, Yourself,

through the line of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham,

down to their descendants

who claimed Your Divine Declaration

that the Land is theirs,

but had to fight for its occupancy;

the Promised Land problematic

for generations of Israelites

who have not enjoyed peace

in the land of promise.

We address You by Your Self-Revealed Name,

and dare to utter it with utmost reverence and awe,

for we love Your NAME,  O YHWH,

and would declare it to all who need to hear

about “Who is the One True God?”

and “What is His Name?”

In the confusion caused by world religions today,

Your True Name has been replaced

by names of non-gods and of idols,

invented by men out of ignorance or intentional deceit,

as though six millennia had not passed

from the time You were angry at the nations

who worshipped gods other than You,

who declared names of non-gods

instead of Your Name,

O YHWH!

Darkness is upon us on our side of  planet earth,

And yet You would not have granted us eyesight

if darkness is all we would ever see during our lifetime—

for physical darkness renders vision useless,

for,  to be able to see with our eyes,

we need even the smallest flicker of light!

And so as Your spectacular sun sets on our horizon,

and night-time is soon upon our side of planet earth,

We kindle these two lights to signal

the beginning of yet another day.

How thoughtful are You, O Creator-God,

to use darkness and light and the heavenly bodies

to signal to sentient human beings

to be ever conscious of the passing of hours,

minutes and seconds that keep moving nonstop through TIME,

So that we might not succumb to the tyranny

of business and activity that we tend to impose upon ourselves.

So much so,

in Your wisdom and concern for our well-being,

recognizing that rest is just as important as work,

You added the 4th Commandment:

You created the 7th day for all humanity

to cease from our daily strivings.

We thank You,  O Creator and Designer of the human body,

for providing us with two eyes with which to see,

for providing us with spiritual eyes as well,

to see beyond our material world.

Yes, how fortunate are we not only to have sight,

but to have been endowed with mental faculties

and spiritual vision to recognize and acknowledge with wonder,

Your Handiwork in the created order

that sustain all life in this perfect world we inhabit,

where the needs of all living creatures

from the simplest to the most complicated,

from the smallest to the biggest,

from the weakest to the strongest,

are provided for.

What an awesome God are You,

O YHWH,

Creator of the Universe,

Light of the World,

Source of Life,

God of Israel, God of Sinaites,

God of Torah-believing Gentiles of the nations,

Amen.

MEDITATION

We pause in reverence before the gift of self:

The vessel shatters, the divine spark shines through,

And our solitary self becomes a link

in Israel’s golden chain,

For what we are, we are by sharing.

And as we share

We move toward the light.

We pause in reverence before the mystery of a presence:

The near and far reality of God.

Not union, but communion is our aim.

And we approach the mystery with deeds.

Words lead us to the edge of action.

But it is deeds that bring us closer to the God of light.

We pause in terror before the human deed:

The cloud of annihilation, the concentrations for death.

The cruelly casual way of each to each.

But in the stillness of this hour

We find our way from darkness into light.

May we find our life so precious

That we cannot but share it with the other,

That light may shine brighter than a thousand suns,

With the presence among us of the God of Light.

May the words of my mouth, and the meditations of my heart,

be acceptable to You, O God,

my Rock and my Redeemer.

May the One who causes peace

to reign in the high heavens

cause peace to descend on us,

on all Israel

(and our beloved Philippines),

and all the world.

Amein.

KINDLE THE SABBATH LIGHTS

Blessed are You, YHWH, our God,

King of the Universe,

Who commanded all humanity

to set aside the Sabbath as a day of rest,

And as we Sinaites, Gentile Sabbath-keepers,

follow the symbolic act in Jewish tradition,

of lighting the Sabbath candles,

We welcome Your Queen of all days,

Your Holy Sabbath at sundown Friday.

[Source: 7th Day Adventist

“Remember the Sabbath”/Revised Lyrics for SINAI 6000]

1.  Remember the Sabbath, the 4th commandment,

it’s the seventh day;

The day when we cease from our daily strivings,

in all and every way—

The Lord of the Sabbath,

Yahuwah is His Name,

He rested on His Sabbath,

we do the same.

2.  Let’s enter the Sabbath,  His Sanctuary . . .

in the realm of time;

Take joy and delight in each passing moment,

it’s His special time . . .

Let’s kindle the Sabbath lights,

break bread and drink the wine,

Take time to read His Torah,

His Tree of Life.

3.  Remember to praise the Lord of Sabbath,

Yahuwah is His Name,

For six days He spoke “let there be” existence,

and all things  came ‘to be’,

The crown of creation,

 the first humanity,

 Formed from existing matter,

a perfect ‘BE’.

4.  Remember the Source of all Life and Being,

Yahuwah is His Name,

On Sinai the God of Creation descended

to speak His Words of Life;

Today we still hear Him,

and heed His Words for Life,

He is the Lord of Sabbath,

the Source of Life.

Praise Him, the Lord of Sabbath,

Our God for Life.

Psalm 19  (ESV) / A Psalm of David.

The heavens declare the glory of God,

and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,

and night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words,

whose voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out through all the earth,

and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for the sun,
5which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
Its rising is from the end of the heavens,

and its circuit to the end of them,
and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;
the fear of the Lord is clean,  enduring forever;
the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.
11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned;

in keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can discern his errors?

Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;

let them not have dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

[A Borrowed Prayer from the Jewish Prayer Book:
Gates of Repentance]
We cannot pray to You, O God,
to banish war,
For You have filled the world
 with paths to peace,
if only we would take them.

We cannot pray to You
 to end starvation,
For there is food enough for all,
if only we would share it.
We cannot merely pray
for prejudice to cease,
For we might see
the good in all
that lies before our eyes,
if only we would use them.
We cannot merely pray,
‘Root out despair,’
For the spark of hope
already waits within the human heart,
for us to fan it into flame.
We must not ask of You, O God,
to take the task that You have given us.
We cannot shirk,
we cannot flee away,
avoiding obligation for ever.
Therefore we pray, O God,
for wisdom and will, for courage
to do and to become,
Not only to look on
with helpless yearning
as though we had no strength.
For your sake and ours,
speedily and soon, let it be:
That our land may be safe,
that our lives may be blessed.
May our words be pleasing in Your sight;
May our deeds be acceptable to You,
O God, our Rock and our Redeemer.

[Original Tune:  In His Time/Revised Lyrics for SINAI 6000]

Bless this home, bless this time;

Bless each one who celebrates in YOUR TIME,

Sabbath-keepers, such are we,

heard Your call for us to be,

Live Your Life for all to see, in our time.

Bless the bread, bless the wine,

Bless our loved ones where they are,

pray they’re ‘fine’,

May they know You more each day,

Show their love for You their way,

Live their lives so that they may . . .  just obey.

Bless our loved ones always Lord,

IN YOUR TIME.

1.  I, the Lord of earth and sky,

All who dwell in darkness they . . .

I who made the stars of night,

I can make the darkness bright.
Who will bear My Light to them,

whom shall I send?

CHO:  Here I am Lord, is it I Lord?
I have heard You calling all my life.
I will share all that You teach me,
They will hear from me,

Your Words of Life.

2.  I,  the God of Israel ,

I am LORD of all as well,
I have Law for humankind,

A Sinaite’s Liturgy in Celebration of Motherhood – 2nd Sabbath in May

KINDLE THE SABBATH LIGHTS

Image from www.chagim.org.i

Image from www.chagim.org.i

O CREATOR of LIGHT,

in the meaningful family tradition of Your chosen people,

the matriarch of the family kindles the Sabbath lights and recites the blessing:

Blessed are You,

YHWH, our God,

King of the Universe,

Who sanctified us with Your commandments

and commanded us to “sanctify the Sabbath.”

As children of all ages celebrate motherhood,

we reflect on the special role and function of childbearing:

You designed the propagation of the human race

through the recreation of new life

to include the participation of both male and female,

but granting woman the unique privilege of hosting an embryo,

designing her to be the suitable vessel

to carry and nurture a developing life to full maturity.

On birthing day when the unborn

leaves the dark security of the womb,

to finally see the light of day,

Mother continues to nurture her child with selfless dedication

until it is time to release and entrust this beloved part of her ‘self’

to the teaching and guidance for life,

divinely assigned to fathers.

Just as Your Words through Isaiah speak of Israel Your Firstborn,

a mother could say to each child that she births,

15 Can a woman

forget her suckling child,

that she should not have compassion

on the son of her womb

yea, they may forget,

yet will I not forget thee.

Bless all Mothers, O GIVER of LIFE,

for their special place in the lives of children,

providing never-ending unconditional love to them.

May children young and old,  see in Mothers that very image of You,

a loving God Who cares that each child fulfills the purpose for which he was created:

to know You first and foremost

yet freely choose his destiny,

with You or without You in it.

It is our prayer that our children will choose ‘Life’,

YOUR LIFE,  for in doing so,

their destiny is rightly directed and ultimately blessed,

and that brings great comfort to a mother’s heart.

It is our prayer that, while fathers are assigned

the primary responsibility of teaching Your Way of Life

to our children and our children’s children,

that mothers will step in, if and only when—

fathers fail to dispense their duty and responsibility

that You have clearly commanded in the SHEMA,

initially to Israel, though intended for all humanity:

Hear, Israel, [O Nations],

YHWH our God, the LORD is one.

And you shall love YHWH your God

with all your heart

and with all your being

and with all your might.

And these words that I charge you  today

will be upon your heart.

And you shall rehearse them to your sons

and speak of them

when you sit in your house

and when you go on the way

and when you lie down

and when you rise.

And you shall bind them

as a sign on your hand

and they shall be as circlets

between your eyes.

And you shall write them

on the doorposts of your house

and in your gates.

[Deuteronomy 6:4-9]

Proverbs 31:28-31

Her children have risen and praised her;

her husband and he extolled her:

“Many women have amassed achievement,

but you surpassed them all.”

Grace is false, and beauty vain;

a woman who fears YHWH,

she should be praised.

Give her the fruits of her hands;

and let her be praised in the gates

by her very own deeds.

Original Tune:  ‘O Mighty Cross’/Revised Lyrics

Image from Berean Ministries

Image from Berean Ministries

 1.  Oh Lord of Life, Who knew my name

before I came to know Your Name,

Your very breath gives me my soul,

my very being, spirit, mind and heart, my all.

2.  Oh God of Truth, how could we know

the way through life, the way to You,

Your guiding Light, your Words of Life,

have led me through the path, the only path to You.

3.  O loving God of humankind,

teach us Your Way, show us Your Mind,

Torah says all we need to know,

there is no other Source of Truth, it is just so.

4.  Immortal God, Who was and is,

from now through all eternity,

You are the First, You are the Last,

no other God is there on earth or heaven above.

BLESSINGS

Image from www.sirc.org

Image from www.sirc.org

O YHWH,

You perfectly designed the world we live in

to sustain all life—with sunshine and air,

water and a variety of  nourishment and provisions for every need to sustain plant, animal and human life.

We bless You for blessing us

with fruit from the vine

and food from Your bountiful nature,

‘manna’ that nourish body, mind, and spirit.

In Your Tabernacle in the wilderness,

You consistently stressed two items together:

the Ark of the Covenant which contained Your revelation on two tablets of stone,

and the table of shewbread which was replaced every Sabbath.

How could we miss the connection:

that as we delight in nourishing our physical life,

we nurture our spiritual life by ‘feeding’ on Your Torah,

both joy and delight not only on the Sabbath,

but as often as we desire food for body and soul.

We celebrate motherhood,

and ask for blessings upon all women

who deliver Your gift of life to each of their children.

May they be rewarded in the desires of the heart,

that their children no matter how old,

will find joy from the Source of all joy,

YOU,  O YHWH, our Lord and our God,

their Creator the Source of all life.

Image from www.accessgenealogy.com

Image from www.accessgenealogy.com

We ask for blessings upon our family,

[name them] fathers, mothers,

sons and daughters, their spouses,

grandchildren, extended kin.

We thank You for the blessing of lives

that are not only well-lived but rightly-lived,

because of a special connection with You,

Who determines length of life

and gives meaning to our being born,

to our being,  to our existence,

and even to the ending of our lifetime.

May none of us waste precious time,

for every second and every minute is forever gone,

and none of us know the length of life

You have allotted each of us on this earth.

For the precious gift of TIME, O YHWH,  we are grateful,

and we are thankful for the time we have spent

with the woman who gave birth to us, (name your mother);

we are just as thankful for surrogate mothers (name them),

and grandmothers (name them).

As we celebrate motherhood,  we say —-

Mabuhay, to Life, L’chaim!

[The Sinaite’s’ musical liturgy

borrows music from Christian hymnody

but our lyrics revision reflect our Sinaite creed.

Imitation is the best compliment;

so we salute the composers  of Christian hymns;

no doubt they were inspired by the God

they love and serve,

just as we are inspired by the God

we have chosen to follow,

to serve and to worship:

His Name is YHWH.  —Admin1

Sing hallelu YAHUWAH LORD;   sing hallelu YAHUWAH LORD;

Sing hallelu YAH, sing hallelu YAH, sing hallelu YAHUWAH LORD!

[Original Tune:  Bread of the World, Revised Lyrics]

LIGHT of the world,  dispel the darkness

that makes men blind who see You not,

There’s unbelief, there’s skepticism,

‘There is no God’, or so they say.

Your LIGHT shines bright to all believers

who see You, listen to Your Voice,

You speak Your Word through all the ages,

from Sinai to our seeking hearts.

[Original Tune:  All Glory, Praise and Honor, Revised Lyrics]

1.  All glory, praise and honor,

Yahuwah God our King!

To Whom our hymns of worship

with loud hosannas sing!

Thou art the God of Israel,

of all humanity,

Who learn Thy guidelines in Thy Word,

believe and worship Thee.

2.  The company of angels

keep praising Thee no end;

10  With my whole heart I seek you;

let me not wander from your commandments!

11  I have stored up your word in my heart,

that I might not sin against you.

12  Blessed are you, O Lord;

teach me your statutes!

13  With my lips I declare

all the rules of your mouth.

14  In the way of your testimonies I delight

as much as in all riches.

15  I will meditate on your precepts

and fix my eyes on your ways.

16  I will delight in your statutes;

I will not forget your word.

Give thanks for this Sabbath day,

Give thanks for this time, we pray,

Give thanks because He’s given

all we need, day to day,

Give thanks for our family,

for spouse, for our children dear,

for special friends we’ve chosen,

all are gifts from His Heart!

And so let us celebrate our joys,

let us celebrate our life,

as we sip our wine, partake of this bread;

all these are sweet blessings from our GOD,

what an awesome loving LORD,

and YAHUWAH is His Name,

praise His Name!

Give Him thanks.

Heed His Word.

Live His Life.

PRAYER

Lord of Life, God of Generations,

You have blessed us with beloved family–

[Name them]

parents,

siblings,

spouse, children,

extended kin,

and special people.

As we partake of this bread and drink this wine,

symbols of Your provisions

and the joy we derive from celebrating Your Sabbath,

We remember them all—

and thank You for intertwining our lives

with one another,

and with others not of our family:

acquaintances, friends, fellow workers,

neighbors, employers, employees,

all of whom are blessings to our life,

as we endeavor to be blessings to them as well,

according to your mandate

to “love our neighbor”—

everyone who does not fit into

“I, me, and myself”

is my “neighbor”.

To LIFE, L’Chaim, Mabuhay!

[Original Tune:  Gracious Spirit, fill thou me/revised lyrics]

1.  Lord Yahuwah, lead the way,

through each moment, each new day.

Help me navigate my way, as I study, learn, and pray,

Thank You for Your Torah life, may I live my life Your way.

2.  Truthful prophets of my God, how can I as truthful be?

And with wisdom speak as clear, may my Torah mind appear,

Followed with good deeds to all, may Thy Truth in me not fall.

3.  Torah Words inspire my soul,  make my actions bare to all.

That my life might speak as loud as the words that make me proud,

Words about Your mighty deeds, may I sow Life-giving seeds.

4.  God invisible to me,  I know You though I can’t see.

Your Creation testifies, Israel still verifies,

Torah is Your legacy, meant for all humanity.

TSTL: Israel as “chosen”

[“TSTL” is our acronym for “Thus Saith the Lord.”  Here are verses in the TORAH from two translations: AST/ArtScroll Tanach, and EF/Everett Fox’s The Five Books of Moses.]

Translation 1:

[AST] DEUTERONOMY

4:5-8

See, I have taught you decrees and ordinances, as HaShem my God, has commanded me, to do so in the midst of the Land to which you come, to possess it.  You shall safeguard and perform them, for it is your wisdom and discernment in the eyes of the peoples, who shall hear all these decrees and who shall say. “Surely a wise and discerning people is this great nation! “  For which is a great nation that has a God Who is close to it, as is HaShem, our God, whenever we call to Him?  And which is a great nation that has righteous decrees and ordinances, such as this entire Torah that I place before you this day?

4:20

But HaShem has taken you and withdrawn you from the iron crucible, from Egypt, to be a nation of heritage for Him, as this very day.

4:33-39

Has a people ever heard the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire as you have heard and survived?  Or has any god ever miraculously come to take for himself a nation from amidst a nation, with challenges, with signs, and with wonders, and with war, and with a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with greatly awesome deeds, such as everything that HaShem your God, did for you in Egypt before your eyes?  You have been shown in order to know that HaShem, He is the God!  There is none like Him!

From heaven He caused you to hear His voice in order to teach you, and on earth He showed you His great fire, and you heard His words from the midst of the fire, because He loved your forefathers, and He chose His offspring after him and took you out before Himself with His great strength form Egypt, to bring you, to give you their land as an inheritance, as this very day.  You shall know this day and take to your heart that HaShem, He is the God—in heaven above and the earth below —there is no other.

 7:1–

When HaShem, your God, will bring you to the Land to which you come to possess it, and He will thrust away many nations from before you —the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivvite, and the Jebusite— seven nations greater and mightier than you, and HaShem your God will deliver them before you. . .

7:6-9

For you are a holy people to HaShem, your God; HaShem, your God, has chosen you to be for Him a treasured people above all the peoples that are on the face of the earth.  Not because you are more numerous than all the peoples did HaShem desire you and choose you, for you are the fewest of all the peoples.  Rather, because of HaShem’s love for you and because He observes the oath that He swore to your forefathers did He take you out and with a strong hand and redeem you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.  You must know that HaShem, your God –He is the God, the faithful God, Who safeguards the covenant and the kindness for those who love Him and for those who observe His commandments, for a thousand generations.

9:5-6

Not because of your righteousness and the uprightness of your heart are you coming to possess their Land, but because of the wickedness of these nations does HaShem, your God, drive them away from before you, and in order to establish the word that HaShem swore to your forefathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.  And you should know that not because of your righteousness does HaShem, your God, give you this good Land to possess it, for you are a stiff-necked people..

10:12-17

Now, O Israel, what does HaShem , your God ask of you?  Only to fear HaShem, your God, to go in all His ways and to love Him, and to serve HaShem, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul, to observe the commandments of HaShem and His decrees, which I command you today, for your benefit.  Behold!  To HaShem, your God, are the heaven and highest heaven, the earth and everything that is in it.  Only your forefathers did HaShem cherish to love them, and He chose their offspring after them–you–from among all the peoples, as this day.  You shall cut away the barrier of your heart and no longer stiffen your neck.  For HaShem, your God –He is the God of the powers and the Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and awesome God, Who does not show favor and Who does not accept a bribe.

15: 6

For HaShem, your God, has blessed you as He has told you; you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow; and you will dominate many nations, but they will not dominate you.

26:16-19

This day, HaShem, your God, commands you to perform these decrees and the statutes, and you shall observe and perform them with all your heart and with all your soul.  You have distinguished HaShem today to be a God for you, and to walk in His ways, and to observe His decrees, His commandments, and His statutes, and to hearken to His voice.  And HaShem has distinguished you today to be for Him a treasured people, as He spoke to you, and to observe all His commandments, and to make you supreme over all the nations that He made, for praise, for renown, and for splendor, and so that you will be a holy people to Hashem, your God, as He spoke.

 28:1-15

And it shall be that if you hearken to the voice of HaShem, your God, to observe, to perform all His commandments that I command you this day, then HaShem, your God, will make you supreme over all the nations of the earth.  All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you, if you hearken to the voice of HaShem, your God:  Blessed shall you be in the city and blessed shall you be in the field.  Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb, and the fruit of your ground, and fruit of your animals. . . blessed shall you be when you come in and blessed shall you be when you go out.  HaShem shall cause your enemies who rise up against you to be struck down before you; on one road will they go out toward you and on seven roads will they flee before you.  HaShem will command the blessing for you in your storehouse and your every undertaking; and He will bless you in the Land that HaShem, your God, gives you.  HaShem will confirm you for Himself as a holy people, as He swore to you—if you observe the commandments of HaShem, your God, and you go in His ways.  Then all the peoples of the earth will see that the Name of HaShem is proclaimed over you, and they will revere you.

But it shall be that if you do not hearken to the voice of HaShem, your God, to observe, to perform all His commandments and all His decrees that I command you today, then all these curses will come upon you and overtake you . .

28:64

HaShem will scatter you among all the peoples, from the end of the earth to the end of the earth, and there you will work for gods of others, whom you did not know — you or your forefathers — of wood and stone.  And among those nations you will not be tranquil, there will be no rest for the sole of your foot; there HaShem will give you a trembling heart, longing of eyes, and suffering of soul.

29:13-14

Not with you alone do I seal this covenant and this imprecation, but with whoever is here, standing with us today before HaShem, our God, and with whoever is not here with us today.

23-28

And all the nations will say, “For what reason did HaShem do so to this Land; why this wrathfulness of great anger?  And they will say, “Because they forsook the covenant of HaShem, the God of their forefathers, that He sealed with them when He took them out of the land of Egypt; and they went and served the gods of others and prostrated themselves to them—gods they knew not and He did not apportion to them.  So God’s anger flared against that Land, to bring upon it the entire curse that is written in this Book, and HaShem removed them from upon their soil, with anger, with wrath, and with great fury, and He case them to another land, as this very day!”

The hidden [sins] are for HaShem, our God, but the revealed [sins] are for us and our children forever, to carry out all the words of this Torah.

Translation 2: The Five Books of Moses, Everett Fox

DEUTERONOMY

4: 5-8

See,
I am teaching you laws and regulations
as YHWH my God has commanded me to do thus,
amid the land that you are entering to possess.
You are to keep (them), you are to observe (them),
for that (will be) wisdom-for-you and understanding-for-you in the eyes of the peoples
who, when they hear all these laws, will say:
Only a wise and understanding people is this great nation!
For who (else) is (such) a great nation
that has gods so near to it
as YHWH our God
in all our calling on him?
And who (else) is (such) a great nation
that has laws and regulations so equitable
as all this Instruction
that I put before you today?

 20. But you, YHWH took

and brought you out of the Iron Furnace, out of Egypt,

to be for him a people of inheritance, as (is) this (very) day.

33-40

Has a people ever heard the voice of a god speaking from the midst of the fire
as you have heard, yourself,
and remained-alive?
Or has a god ever essayed to come and take himself a nation from within a nation,
with trials, signs, portents and deeds-of-war,
with a strong hand and an outstretched arm
and with great awe-inspiring (acts), according as all that YHWH your God did in Egypt before your eyes?
You yourself have been made-to-see, to know
that YHWH—He is God,
there is none else beside him!
From the heavens he had you hear his voice, to discipline you;
on earth he had you see his great fire,
and his words you heard from the midst of the fire.
Now since he loved your fathers,
he chose their seed after them
and brought you out of his presence with great power from Egypt,
to dispossess nations greater and mightier than you from before you,
by bringing you out, by giving you their land as an inheritance, as (is) this (very) day—
know today and lay it up in your heart,
that YHWH—he is God
in the heavens above and on the earth beneath, (there is) none else!
You are to keep his laws and his commandments that I command you today,
that it may go-well with you and with your children after you,
in order that you may prolong days on the soil
that YHWH your God is giving you,
all the days (to come).

 Deuteronomy 7:1-2

When YHWH your God brings you to the land that you are entering to possess,
and dislodges great nations before you
—the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perrizite, the Hivvite, and the Yevusite–
seven nations more numerous and mightier (in number) than you,
and YHWH your God gives them before you and you strike them down:
you are to devote-them-to-destruction,
you are not to cut with them a covenant, you are not to show-them-mercy!

vss. 6-10

For you are a people holy to YHWH your God,
(it is) you (that) YHWH your God chose for him as a treasured people
from among all peoples that are on the face of the soil.
Not because of your being many-more than all the peoples
has YHWH attached himself to you and chosen you,
for you are the least-numerous of all peoples!
Rather, because of YHWH’s love for you
and because of his keeping the sworn-oath that he swore to your fathers
did YHWH take you out, with a strong hand,
and redeem you from a house of serfs,
from the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.
Know
that YHWH your God, he is God,
the trustworthy God,
keeping the covenant of loyalty with those who love him and with those who keep his commandments,
to the thousandth generation,
and paying back those who hate him to his face, by causing them to perish–
he does not delay (punishment) to those who hate him to his face; he pays them back!

9:5-6

Not because of your righteous-merit, or because of the uprightness of your heart, are you entering to possess their land,
but rather because of the wickedness of these nations
is YHWH your God dispossessing them from before you,
and in order that he might uphold the word that YHWH swore to your fathers, to Avraham, to Yitzhak, and to Yaakov.
You are to know
that not because of your righteous-merit is YHWH your God giving you this good land to possess, for a people hard of neck are you!

 10:12-21

And now, O Israel,
what does YHWH your God ask of you
except to hold YHWH your God in awe,
to walk in all his ways
and to love him
and to serve YHWH your God with all your heart and with all your being,
to keep the commandments of YHWH and his laws which I command you today,
to have it go well for you?
Here, HYHWH your God are
the heavens and the heavens of heavens,
the earth and all that is on it!
Only to your fathers was YHWH attached, to love them, so he chose their seed after them,
you, above all (other) peoples, as (is) this (very) day.
So circumcise the foreskin of your heart,
your neck you are not to keep hard anymore;
for YHWH your God,
he is the God of gods and the Lord of lords,
the God great, powerful, and awe-inspiring,
he who lifts up no face (in favor) and takes no bribe,
providing justice (for) orphan and widow,
loving the sojourner, by giving him food and clothing.
So you are to love the sojourner,
for sojourners were you in the land of Egypt;
YHWH your God you are to hold-in-awe,
him you are to srve,
to him you are to cling,
by his name you are to swear!
He is your praise, he is your God,
who did for you these great and awe-inspiring (acts) that your (own) eyes saw.

15:6

indeed, YHWH your God will bless you as he promised you;
you will cause many nations to give-pledges,
but you will not (have to) give pledges;
you will rule over many nations,
but over you they shall not rule.

26:16-19

This day
YHWH your God commands you to observe these laws and the regulations;
you are to take care and observe them
with all your heart and with all your being.
YHWH you hae declared today, to be for you a god,
to walk in his ways and to keep his laws, his commandments and his regulations,
and to hearken to his voice.
And YHWH has declared you today, to be for him a specially-treasured people,
as he promised you,
to be-careful (regarding) all his commandment,
and to set you most-high above all the nations that he has made,
for praise, for fame, and for honor, f
or you to be a people holy to YHWH your God,
as he promised.

28:1-15

Now it shall be:
if you hearken, yes, hearken to the voice of YHWH your God,
taking-care to observe all his commandments that I command you today,
then YHWH your God will make you most-high
above all the nations of the earth.
Then there will come upon you all these blessings, and overtake you,
since you have hearkened to the voice of YHWH your God:
Blessed be you, in the town,
blessed be you, in the (open) field;
blessed be the fruit of your womb, the fruit of your soil, and the fruit of your animals,
the offspring of your cattle and the fecundity of your sheep.
Blessed be your basket and your kneading-bowl.
Blessed be you, in your coming-in,
blessed be you, in your going-out.
May YHWH make your enemies, those that rise against you,
be smitten before you;
by one road they will go out against you,
by seven roads they will flee before you.
YHWH will ordain for you the blessing
in your storehouses,
in all the enterprises of your hand,
and he will bless you in the land that YHWH your God is giving you.
YHWH will establish you to be a people holy to him,
as he swore to you,
when you keep the commandments of YHWH your God
and walk in his ways.
And when all the peoples of the earth see
that the name of YHWH is proclaimed over you,
they will hold you in awe.
YHWH will leave-excess for you of good things,
in the fruit of your womb, the fruit of your animals, and the fruit of your soil,
on the soil that YHWH swore to your father, to give them.
YHWH will open for you his goodly treasuries, the heavens,
by giving the rain of your hand in its set-time,
and by blessing all the doings of your hand;
you will lend to many nations,
but you yourself will to have to take-a-loan.
YHWH will make you the head and not the tail
you will be only top, you will not be bottom, –
—if you hearken to the commandments of YHWH your God
which I command you today, by taking-care and by observing (them),
that you not turn aside from all the words that I command you today,
to the right or to the left,
by walking after other gods, by serving them.
But it shall be:
If you do not hearken to the voice of YHWH your God,
by taking-care and by observing all his commandments and his laws
that I command you today,
then there will come upon you all these curses and overtake you . . .

64  YHWH will scatter you among all the peoples, from the edge of the earth to the (other) edge of the earth; you will serve there other gods, whom you have not known, (either ) you or your fathers, of wood and of stone.

29:13 Not wit you, you alone

do I cut this covenant and this oath,
but with the one that is here, standing with us today,
before the presence of YHWH our God,
and (also) with the one that is not here with us today.
23-28 Then shall say all the nations:
For what (reason) did YHWH do thus to this land,
(for) what was this great flaming anger?
And they shall say (in reply):
Because they abandoned the covenant of YHWH the God of their fathers
that he cut with them when he took them out of the land of Egypt:
they went and served other gods and prostrated-themselves to them,
gods they had not known and that he had not apportioned to them.
So the anger of YHWH flared up against that land,
to bring upon it all the curse that is written in this document.
So YHWH uprooted them from their soil
in anger, wrath, and great fury,
and he cast them into another land, as (is) this day.
The hidden things are for YHWH our God,
but the revealed-things are for us and for our children, for the ages,
to observe all the words of this instruction.

Exodus 20:1-14

Image from www.setapartpeople.co

God spoke all these statements, saying:
I am HaShem, your God, Who has taken you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.
You shall not recognize the gods of others in My presence.

You shall not make yourself a carved image nor any likeness of that which is in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the water beneath the earth. You shall not prostrate yourself to them nor worship them, for I am HaShem your God — a jealous God, Who visits the sin of fathers upon children to the third and fourth generations, for My enemies, but Who shows kindness for thousands [of generations] to those who love Me and observe My commandments.

You shall not take the Name of HaShem, your God, in vain, for HaShem will not absolve anyone who takes His Name in vain.

Remember the Sabbath day to sanctify it. Six days shall you work and accomplish all your work; but the seventh day is Sabbath to HaShem, your God; you shall not do any work — you, your son, your daughter, your slave, your maidservant, your animal, and your convert within your gates — for in six days HaShem made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and He rested on the seventh day. Therefore, HaShem blessed the Sabbath day and sanctified it.

Honor your father and our mother, so that your days will be lengthened upon the land that HaShem, your God, gives you.

You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness against your fellow.

You shall not covet your fellow’s house.  You shall not covet your fellow’s wife, his manservant, his maidservant, his ox, his donkey, nor anything that belongs to your fellow.

Translation 2:  THE FIVE BOOKS OF MOSES – by Everett Fox

1  God spoke all these words, saying:

2 I am YHWH your God,
who brought you out
from the land of Egypt, from the house of serfs.
3  You are not to have
any other gods
before my presence.
4  You are not to make yourself a carved-image
or any figure
that is in the heavens above, that is on the earth beneath, that is in the waters beneath the earth;
5  you are not to bow down to them,
you are not to serve them,
for I, YHWH your God,
am a zealous God,
calling-to-account the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons, to the third and the fourth (generation)
of those that hate me,
6  but showing loyalty to the thousandth
of those that love me,
of those that keep my commandments.
7  You are not to take up
the name of YHWH your God for emptiness,
for YHWH will not clear him
that takes up his name for emptiness.
8  Remember
the Sabbath day, to hallow it.
9  For six days, you are to serve, and are to make all your work,
10 but the seventh day
is Sabbath for YHWH your God:
you are not to make any kind of work,
(not) you, nor your son, nor your daughter,
(not) your servant, nor your maid, nor your beast,
nor your sojourner that is within your gates.
11  For in six days
YHWH made the heavens and the earth,
the sea and all that is in it,
and he rested on the seventh day;
therefore YHWH gave the Sabbath day his blessing, and he hallowed it.
12 Honor
your father and your mother,
in order that your days may be prolonged
on the soil that YHWH your God is giving you.
13  You are not to murder.
You are not to adulter.
You are not to steal.
 You are not to testify
against your fellow as a false witness.
14  You are not to desire
the house of your neighbor,
you are not to desire the wife of your neighbor,
or his servant, or his maid, or his ox, or his donkey,
or anything that is your neighbor’s.
15  Now all of the people were seeing
the thunder-sounds,
the flashing-torches,
the shofar sound,
and the mountain smoking;
when the people saw,
they faltered
and stood far off.
16  They said to Moshe:
You speak with us, and we will hearken,
but let not God speak with us, lest we die!
17  Moshe said to the people:
Do not be afraid!
For it is to test you that God has come,
to have awe of him be upon you,
so that you do not sin.
18  The people stood far off, >
and Moshe approached the fog where God was.
19 YHWH said to Moshe:
Say thus to the Children of Israel:
You yourselves have seen that it was form the heavens that i spoke with you.
20  You are not to make beside me
gods of silver, gods of gold you are not to make for yourselves!
21  A slaughter-site of soil, you are to make for me,
you are to slaughter upon it
your offerings-up, your sacrifices of shalom,
your sheep and your oxen!
At every place
where I cause my name to be recalled
I will come to you
and bless you.
22  But if a slaughter-site of stones you make for me,
you are not to build it smooth-hewn,
for if you hold-high your iron-tool over it, you will have profaned it.
23  And you are not to ascend my slaughter-site by ascending steps,
that your nakedness not be laid-bare upon it.
