There was a time as close-minded Christians, Sinaites would not venture outside our church boundaries to read anything other than Christian literature;  and certainly not ‘prayers’ or expressions of faith unless they ended “in Jesus’ name.”  And yet, in our Sinaite library, we have a coffee table book featuring beautiful photography by Kulbir Thandi, used to illustrate the phases of life and prayers relating to the images of children,  of rites of passage in various phases of life:  for marriage, recovery and renewal, for peace, and ‘in memoriam.’  Since our whole perspective has changed since we left Christianity and we learned to embrace and be more understanding of world religions,  it would be a pity not to share the contents of this collection of prayers. So as part of our “Worship Aids” section, we are featuring selected prayers in this series that carry the simple one-word book title  – “AMEN”.

May the true Elohim who revealed His name as YHWH be praised by these expressions of worship inspired by the simple awareness of people of faith that He exists,  that He desires to be honored, by His crown of creation— humanity,  even more so by and especially coming from  “uncircumcised lips“.  Expect the prayers to be posted in a series, this post is simply the Introduction.–Admin1].

Judas – did he really exist?

[Frst posted 2014, reposted 2015;  updated for ‘Holy’ Week every year.

The betrayal of the Christian Savior by one of his 12 is part of the Passion Week narrative.  The name “Judas” has become synonymous with words like traitor, back-stabber, snake in the grass, etc.  What parents would name their child ‘Judas’, anathema, second only to ‘Lucifer’?

Ever wonder what the acronym INRI on the upper part of the crucifix stands for?

 “Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum”

or “Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews.”

Here’s food for thought.  There being no letter “J” till the middle ages, “Judas” would have been spelled “Iudas” (guessing), but let’s connect the dots:   Judas/Iudas, Judea/Iudaea, Jews/Iudaeorum.  Is it mere coincidence that the betrayer of “Iesus” was named “Iudas” that sounds like “Jew-das”?  Remember that biblical names were not mere names but descriptive attributions to character, if not destiny.

Rabbi Schmuley Boteach whose book Kosher Jesus is our current MUST READ continues to analyze key figures in the Gospels of the New Testament.  Please read the previous posts featuring other chapters from this book. The book is downloadable in ebook format from amazon.com. Reformatted and highlighted for this post.—Admin1.]

Chapter 11:  Did Judas Really Exist?

As Peter’s brand of anti-Semitism gathered force over the years, Judas Iscariot became a favorite figure for Christian thinkers and writers intent on castigating the Jews.  A perfect villain, the former apostle was willing to sell his teacher for a couple of gold coins.  To many anti-Semitic Christians, he seemed the very model of the money-grubbing perfidious Jew – and for that, they made him famous.

These thinkers found it easy to smear the Jews by pointing to the dichotomy of the figures of Peter and Judas.  Peter was a representative of the Church, while Judas stood in for the Jews.  Augustine of Hippo set the stage for centuries of anti-Jewish feeling by writing, “One wicked man [Judas] represents the whole body of the wicked; in the same way as Peter, the whole body of the good, yea, the body of the Church.”  Similarly, Saint Jerome (374-419 CE) used judas to associate Jews with the treacherous serpent in the Garden of Eden, denouncing Jews as “Judaic serpents of whom Judas was the model.”

In dramatic literature and art Judas embodies the anti-Jewish

polemic. Artists usually endow Judas with grossly exaggerated

Semitic features, such as a giant nose, and he is often grubby and dirty.  His love for money and readiness to sell out his most vital interests for cash serve as a model for several other anti-Semitic caricatures, most notably Shakespeare’s miserly Shylock.  As early as the fourth century, Pope Gelasius I summed up how many Christians still view Judas:  “In the Bible, the whole is often named after the part:  as Judas was called a devil and the devil’s workman, he gives his name to the whole race.”

It’s not hard to see where this idea originated.  In the New Testament itself, Judas is frequently shown as a conduit of Satan.  In the Book of Luke, it is casually stated, “Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot.” In another variation on that same idea, the Book of John notes, As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.”  Before the Last Supper, John informs us, “The devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.”

Alone among the other Gospels, the Book of John goes a step further, stitching Judas’ obsession with money into the story.  In the Gospel of John, Judas is the treasurer of Jesus’ organization and embezzles from the common funds.  According to one story, “Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus feet and wiped his feet with her hair.  And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.  But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, ‘Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the monty given to the poor?  It was worth a years’ wages.'” Naturally, Judas does not say this because he cares about the poor.  In John’s eyes, he is a thief.  As keeper of the purse, he has already been seen helping himself to its contents, and he wants to make sure he won’t miss a single coin.

Image from www.zianet.com

Even isolated as it is in the Gospel of John, this portrayal of Judas’ supposedly acquisitive ways had real and lasting consequences for the Jewish community.  For, as Hyam Maccoby has observed, “The association of Christian society to drive the Jews into money-lending as their sole permitted occupation, owes much to this emblematic portrayal of Judas.”

It is already suspicious that this story occurs in only one out of four Gospels.  And other signs of editorial meddling are immediately in evidence.  As Maccoby demonstrates, this story seems to be a simple amalgamation of two earlier stories found elsewhere.  “The first (Mark 14:3-9; Matthew 26:6-11; Luke 7:37) also takes place in Bethany.  An unnamed woman pours precious ointment on Jesus’ head, and is reproved – not by Judas Iscariot, but by ‘some of the present’ (Mark) or by the ‘disciples’ (Matthew) – for wasting ointment that could have been sold to benefit the poor… The second story (Luke 10:38-42) concerns the two sisters Martha and Mary, but it is situated in ‘a certain village,’ not Bethany, nor does it refer to precious ointment.”  It seems clear that this tale of Judas’ corruption so vital to smearing the Jews as money-grubbers, is a fabrication, and one that falls apart after the merest scrutiny.

Today, most Christians remember Judas as the betrayer of Jesus.  Here is John’s retelling of that event:

When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.  On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.  Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.  So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.  They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.  Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied, “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)

After that, we hear nothing further of Judas.  As far as John’s Gospel is concerned, Judas has proven himself evil incarnate.  Having betrayed Jesus, he loses his identity and is no longer of interest.  But there is something startling in this story if only we look closer.

Only in this fragment of John does the true story come out.  Jesus, a rebellious Jew, has been arrested by the Roman troops.  They arrested him with the assistance of Jewish collaborators.  Judas among them, intent on betraying the leader of the Jewish resistance to the Roman occupation.  What makes the story so remarkable is that anywhere else, the Book of John takes great pains to demonstrate that Jesus had no political mission whatsoever.  So why does the real story suddenly emerge here of all places?  Incomplete and careless editing has allowed a sliver of the undeniable truth to remain:  Jesus was already arrested not by henchmen of the high priests but by Roman troops, enforcers against sedition.

Judas the Symbolic Figure

Many scholars now believe Judas Iscariot never existed in the first place, and was written into the story solely to incriminate the Jews.  Among others, leading Christian scholar Raymond Brown matter-of-factly writes in The Death of the Messiah that many scholars believe that Judas never existed but was a symbolic figure.

The first and most compelling reason to think so is the simple fact of Judas’ name.  That the apostle whose very name literally means “Jew” is the one to turn in Jesus seems contrived in the extreme.

Also, if Judas did exist, it is shocking that Paul never mentions him throughout all of his works.  Paul revels in the death of Jesus, modeling his entire spiritual-philosophical system after the events of the crucifixion.  If a man named Judas were involved he would have certainly used such a story in his proselytizing.  Yet he does not even mention the apostle who allegedly betrayed Jesus above all others.  This glaring omission seems utterly baffling until we consider that Paul’s epistles were written before the Gospels.  It seems very plausible that the story of Judas took root only after Paul’s death.  He gives it absolutely no mention because Judas hasn’t yet been invented.

Giving further credence to this concept are the number of early Gospel iterations in which Judas is missing, despite being present in later Gospel versions.  These scenes, too, bear clear marks of substantial rewriting.

Peter’s uncanonized gospel refers to the presence of twelve apostles even after Jesus’ death.  “Now it was the last day of the unleavened bread, and many are going forth, returning to their homes, as the feast has ended.  But we, the twelve disciples of the Lord, wept and were grieved; and each one, being grieved for that which has come to pass, departed to his home.”  Hyam Maccaby has pointed out that whoever wrote the Gospel of Peter must have been unaware that Judas supposedly had already left Jesus’ inner circle, according to accounts in the accepted Gospels.  This discrepancy also supports the idea that the entire character of judas was a fabrication.

Yet among the most convincing indications that Judas was fictional is his biblical precursor.  Most Christian readers will be unaware of the Hebrew Bible story of Ahitophel, King David’s treacherous adviser.  Yet the similarities between Ahitophel and Judas are glaringly conspicuous.  These shared elements point to a deliberate attempt to make Jesus look like David, the first messianic king, and to cast the Jews as traitors responsible for the murder of Jesus.

Both Ahitophel and Judas are traitors, leading armies to the man they are betraying.  The Second Book of Samuel describes the scene.  Ahitophel says to Absalom, David’s son, who has rebelled and usurped the throne and seeks his father’s life:

“I would choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David.  I would attack him while he is weary and weak.  I would strike him with terror, and then all the people with him will flee.  I would strike down only the king and bring all the people back to you.  The death of the man you seek will mean the return of all; all the people will be unharmed.”

If we compare this passage to the story of Judas as related in the Gospel of Mark, parallels swiftly become apparent:

“Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve appeared.  With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.  Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: ‘The one I kiss is the man, arrest him and lead him away under guard.’  Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, ‘Rabbi!’ and kissed him.”

Ahitophel and Judas, betrayers of Jewish kings for personal interest, seem cut from the same cloth.

Judas and Ahitophel are also drawn together by the fact that both commit suidcide.  The Hebrew Bible describes the scene:

“When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders . .. So Judas threw the money into the temple and left.  Then he went away and hanged himself.”

To sum up, Ahitophel and Judas are both treacherous disciples who lead armies to capture their former masters and commit suicide by hanging themselves.

Indeed, the story of Judas kissing Jesus in an act of betrayal seems reminiscent of an earlier biblical story as well.  As Maccoby writes:

It has been suggested that the story was influenced by the Hebrew Bible story of Joab and Amasa, the two rival generals of King David.  Joab falls into disfavor with the king, and was replaced as commander-in-chief by Amasa.  But when he was charged with leading reinforcement troops to help Amasa.  Joab treacherously contrived to assassinate him.

‘And Joab said to Amasa, ‘Is it well with thee, my brother?’ And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.”

The image of betrayal by a kiss is undoubtedly there in both stories, and it is clearly a story-motif common in the East.  It is expressed also in the Hebrew Bible in the form of a proverb:

“The blows of a friend are well-meant, but the kisses of an enemy are perfidious.” (Proverbs 27:6).

With each detail it seems ever more clear that, between his textual forebears and his transparently concocted name, Judas is none other than a literary creation.

But the greatest piece of evidence for the nonexistence of Judas is the fact that the New Testament later gives a completely different story of how Judas died.  The story quoted above, describing Judas’ hanging, is directly contradicted by the Book of Acts, in which Judas dies due to a horrible divine punishment.

[This discourse was between Sinaite BAN and Messianic/church-planter “RW” who has had  discourses with other members of Sinai 6000 and who had written a book titled “According to R” which he suggested to us to reread and review what he had taught members of our group for decades. This exchange was written 7 years ago, exactly the time when our small core group had just started announcing to former Christian colleagues that we were leaving the religion we had embraced for half a century or more.  At that time, we had not finalized our set of beliefs into a creed; we had not even thought about what to call ourselves; we only knew for sure that while we had stepped out of Christianity, we were not headed toward Judaism.  We had not even gotten on the pathway leading to Spiritual Sinai, a time when we were asking ourselves “what now” and “where to”?  RW” is featured in discourses with other Sinaites (NSB and VAN), check out the Discourse Category.—Admin1]

BAN to RW:

Take a look at this article.

——————————

RW to BAN:

Nice try, but their explanation “does not cut the mustard.”  They do not have “eyes to see” even tho they think they know Hebrew.  They have made a basic assumption and try to go about to prove it – that it speaks of the nation of Israel.  As I read their try, they do not convince me at all, they are grasping at anything to deny the obvious, which is that the text is talking about a Person, and that is Yeshua.

We all start with basic assumptions.  You have assumed that Yeshua is a fraud, that Jewish people know the Hebrew best and their interpretations are correct, and that the NT is a forgery.  Now you are feeding your assumption until you are convinced – your free will choice. If you are right, fine.  If you are wrong, total disaster.

Years ago I made my basic assumption, that the whole 66 books are inspired by God and accurate.  Since then I have continually put that assumption to the test until now it has been verified in my mind to the point that it is no longer an assumption but a Foundation stone.  My free will and my choice.  If I am right, fine.  If I am wrong, still ok, as the Father is there and my prayers are to Him in Yeshua’s Name.

To date He has given me no indication that my prayers are rejected – rather to the contrary, many are answered very clearly.  Read my book.

—————————–

BAN to RW:

Thanks for your reply.  I have always thought that you taught us to think Hebraic when reading the Scriptures, so now you read it differently?

I have never said that Yeshua is a fraud.  I adhere to the fact that he is a historical person who lived and preached about the Kingdom of God.  He had advocated that we all follow the Torah in its fullest and he followed it to the fullest.

The Apostolic Scriptures, though it contains truth, also contains edited truths, to suit the agenda of the first century gentiles who were the leaders of the emerging Christian religion and used the Torah to bolster their claim that Yeshua is divine.

Who would understand Hebrew best?   Wouldn’t it be the Hebrew scholars who have devoted their whole life to the study of the Torah? Or would it be people like us who depend or used to depend on the Greek translation?

Yes, we all come with a basic assumption that Torah is God’s Word and that it can stand on its own.  Can the Apostolic Scriptures stand on its own without the Torah?

Thank God for His Grace that He has given us eyes to see and the heart to obey and the free will to choose to follow the Torah, for that is the foundation stone that He gave us.

Once again, I am thanking God for your part in opening our eyes and hearts to His Truth.

——————————

RW to BAN:

Thanks…I always want to think Hebraic, but not always Jewish, as to think rabbinic Jewish is to follow their rabbit trails off the foundation.

Blessings on you and VAN, and family as we head into a certain future, with many uncertain details along the way.

When Yeshua said “The Father and I are one,” He clearly said He was deity, equal to His Father, and at His trial, the high priest knew He claimed to be deity.
Also, the Messianic Community was led by Jewish leaders up to the time of Constantine – check out Eusabias’ list – not by first century Gentiles, many of whom broke off from the Messianic community to form what became the “church.”

These Jewish “scholars” are telling you many lies.  They are full of hate, showing it violently against Messianic Believers in Israel.  As they claim to follow Torah, they show differently, the opposite.

Anyway, you have chosen a different path.  Hopefully we can maintain our Love for God and Love for our neighbors, as very difficult days are ahead and many will fall away.

Sayang…. Shalom.

  1.  The event of the water that turned to blood was to scorn Hapi, the Nile god.
  2. The emergence of frogs in all of the Egyptian courts and neighborhood was an assault to Ptha, the frog-headed god and Heka, the frog goddess.
  3. The appearance of lice or fleas over all Egyptian regions, except Goshen where the Hebrews are, was to ridicule Leb or Seb, the earth god, who is the protector against things that come out of the ground.
  4. The invasion of flies that tormented them was to scorn Khepara, the beetle god.
  5. The cattle pest that attacked the Egyptian herd alone was a contempt upon Hathor, the sacred cattle god at Memphis and the mother goddess who had the head of a cow and Apis, the bull-god.
  6.  boils that broke forth upon the Egyptians and their animals were to criticize Neit, the goddess queen of heaven and Imhotep, the god of medicine.
  7. The hail with fire that rained upon the land of Egypt killing Egyptian man and beast, herbs and trees was to assault Iris, the water deity and Orisis, the fire and sun deity.
  8. The locusts, that swarmed all over the Egyptian fields and ate up all the herbs and fruits which the hail had left, was a direct insult upon Seraphis, the insect god.
  9. The thick darkness was experienced in all the land of Egypt for three days but all the Hebrews had lighting in their neighborhood.  This event was a mockery to the supreme Egyptian deity Ra, the sun god, from whom Pharaoh, meaning sun, got his name.
  10. Finally, the tenth plague, wherein all the firstborn of the Egyptians and their cattle died, was a grave satire upon Pharaoh himself.  Being considered as the image of the divine, he was worshipped as a god, but in the plague, the son of god would also die.

Five years in the world wide web . . . already?

Image from Brainless Tales

Image from Brainless Tales

[We neglected to repost this on the anniversary of this website in February; the original title was “A Year in the World Wide Web . . . Already?  It recounts the beginning of Sinai 6000 which we’ve repeated in many articles like a broken record, ad nauseum.  The truth is, we can barely convince one more soul in our individual circles of friends/acquaintances/Christian colleagues, so we figured perhaps there are like-minded seekers elsewhere on God’s earth who might benefit from our research and sharing.  So we got on the “www” that transcends all kinds of boundaries and there, we found our niche!—Admin1]

————————–

If you are a frequent visitor to this website, you have most likely read the Sinai 6000 raison d’être and ongoing apologetics in subsequent posts. The month of February marks our first anniversary in joining the World Wide Web so we keep looking back to where we were then, the starting point of our journey on the pathway leading to Spiritual Sinai, the Mountain of Divine Revelation.

Sinai 6000 as a start-up community was casually organized in Tishrei 5772 (September 2011), significantly timed during the biblical festival called “Rosh Hashanah” the Jewish new year. At the time, a website was not in our horizon but as we progressed from starting over on a new pathway, our research, study and discussions of untold lessons learned as well as unlearned compelled us to share fresh insights, specifically our “new” understanding of “old” truths that had been staring us in the face for all those decades we were neglecting the “Old Testament” prequel in our Christian Bible.  These ‘old’ truths were new to us but only because we had not taken any serious interest to read the 39 books, 2/3 of the Christian Bible except to check out “prooftexts” cited by Christian apologists which we never questioned; after all, who were we compared to the best minds of the Christian faith?

When we did veer off the detour that Christianity took from the original path long trodden by the people of Israel, it has been a slow progress because we simultaneously dealt with new discoveries as well as unnecessary irrelevant unshed excess baggage from our Christian roots. In a year we managed to cover only Bereshiyth, Shemoth and got halfway through Waiqrah, struggling to remember, pronounce and spell Hebrew titles and names while learning the peculiarities of the Hebrew language that we had difficulty grasping in the English translation and with our Hellenized/western mindset.  What!? Hebrew has no neuter, no upper case, no vowels in the original?  And the concept of such a word as elohiym (used to prove that God is ‘plural’) is no big deal in Hebrew, includes many shades of meaning, with applications depending on context. Do we even have enough years left in our lifetime to scratch the surface of just the Sinai revelation?

We were realistic enough to expect that our “radical” change— from “saved” to “unsaved”, switching loyalties from Jesus to YHWH, swapping our Christian Bible for the Hebrew Scriptures—would not at all be welcome in the Christian/Messianic circles we had for so long been part of;  so we imagined that perhaps there were others like ourselves who were in a similar quandary, discontented with unresolved questions regarding their faith, seeking answers but having no access to resources such as what we had already collected in our Sinai 6000 library.  Perhaps we could help them in their search by sharing our quest step by step . . . .

What could we possibly contribute to the glut of information already available in the internet about any and every conceivable topic? What could we say specifically about Christianity and its Bible, or Judaism and its Hebrew Scriptures?  Who would bother (if they even stumble upon our website) to check out what this bunch of unknowns (consistently mistaken for ‘Jew-wannabes’) are all about?

Image from This too shall pass - blogger

Image from This too shall pass – blogger

At the time it did not matter . . . recall that philosophical question: if a tree fell in the forest and nobody was around, would there be a sound? Of course there would be, just that nobody would hear at the time it happened but should somebody discover the felled tree later, he could possibly hear the sound in the ears of his imagination and even whisper “timberrrrr”. . . . So if nobody knew about our website and nobody ever read anything we posted, what use is it to anyone except to us? If it never mattered to anyone else but to us, that was all that mattered at the time, for we were not all in one location and in fact some had migrated to other lands. The website would keep each of us feeling connected, belonging to one community who think alike, for where else would we fit in the scheme of things?

Six months after organizing as Sinaites, during the month of February, www.sinai6000.net was launched, categorized as a “resource center,”  a virtual repository or medium for expressing our collective and individual voices during our transition when we switched loyalties in answer to one all-important question:

Who is your God?

In what we have described as a spiritual pilgrimage to meet the One True God and relearn His original revelation, we virtually travelled from the cradle of Christianity—Rome— but not toward Jerusalem as wrongly guessed by most people; our destination became Sinai, the place after which we chose to name our small community.  As we have repeatedly explained, Sinai is the mountain on which YHWH declared His Name, cut a covenant with a people who would be His representatives in delivering His revelation to the nations. It was comfortable to be on neutral ground, our ‘spiritual home,’ territory that could not be identified with any major world religion, save the Revelator of the TORAH.  While YHWH is the God identified with the nation of Israel, He is the God associated with Sinai, the God of the nations, the Creator and Master of the universe, the Revelator we rediscovered in the Hebrew Scriptures Whom we readily embraced.

We embraced as well His revelation in the TORAH, the first five books attributed to Moses, recognizing and acknowledging these books and them alone, as the “Word” of YHWH for all mankind.  Thus began the process of unlearning our previous wrong approach of reading the Christian “Old” Testament with a New Testament mindset;  instead, we read the TORAH with fresh eyes and with the uncluttered mind of a child.   Not surprisingly, it made a big difference in our understanding.

The most helpful resources came from Jewish websites; we didn’t hesitate to seek answers from Ask the Rabbi.  We searched for Hebrew translations that did not shy away from printing the Tetragrammaton Name “YHWH” but failed to find any; so we settled for the Stone Edition of ArtScroll Tanach [AST] which, in keeping with Jewish reluctance to utter or print the Name, substitutes “Ha Shem” [the Name]. [Update 2017: Since then we have discovered Everett Fox’s excellent translation in poetic format, naming God directly as YHWH instead of circumlocutions like LORD, and we are now adding the translation of Robert Alter and his commentary this year.]

And since our background had been as teachers, preachers, bible study organizers, church planters, fellowship-starters in Christ-centered denominations, our grasp of Christian teachings enabled us to conduct discourses with Christian and Messianic mentors and colleagues.

To date [2017] we have lost count of recorded visits to this website from all over the world; many no doubt are unintended or accidental landings, though a precious 10% are frequent returning visitors who linger for hours, in fact lately a handful seem to be downloading every post in every category!  This encourages us to continue our sharing; evidently, there are not a few kindred spirits out there just as gung-ho as we are in searching for more satisfactory  answers.

It is our prayer that SINAI 6000 continue to be given more opportunity and time to serve the God we have come to know, love, and worship because of the ‘light’ and ‘legacy’ of Israel to  all mankind — an enduring record of YHWH’s TORAH as foundational and preliminary to their chronicles, their prophets and their sacred writings.

May the Jewish websites representing “the people of the book ” be blessed for their continuing efforts to help Jews and Gentiles alike in understanding that the Hebrew Scriptures are still and all the more relevant in our day and age.

May YHWH,

the Revelator on Sinai,

the God of Truth,

be praised, blessed be His Name!

May the day hasten

when He will be known

and worshipped by all peoples,

all religions, all nations,

for only then will His Shalom

bless the Land and people of Israel,

and His servant people in the Diaspora.

[This article was in 2012; it reflects what Sinaites have gradually evolved into— a distinct start-up community with specific and identifiable beliefs and practices.  At the time this was first posted, we did appear to be Jew-wannabes; hence the constant attempt to correct the misperception and to clarify what we’re not and who we are.  Yes, we sound like a broken record but there’s good reason — repetition allows a message to sink in though to this day, some Jewish friends in our city keep thinking we’re into Judaism just because we’re Sabbath-keepers, eat kosher, study TNK, live Torah. —Admin1.]

—————–

There are two parts to this question:

  • Are you Jew-wannabes?
  • If not, what are you?

What is a ‘Jew-wannabe’?

A person who decides to become a Jew? Or one who imitates Jews?

For an interesting article on “Who is  Jew”, please go to http://www.jewfaq.org/search.shtml?Keywords=who+is+a+jew%3F

Jew—-A person whose mother was a Jew or who has converted to Judaism. According to the Reform movement, a person whose father is a Jew is also a Jew. Although the term is derived from the term “Judahite” (meaning a member of the tribe of Judah or a citizen of the kingdom of Judah), it has historically been applied to the patriarchs, the matriarchs and all of the descendants of Jacob and all converts to their faith. See Who Is a Jew?

Since Sinaites are ALL gentiles, the question must mean—we are trying to be like Jews?

Why would people get this impression? The following typical observations have been given:

  • because you’re focused on the Old Testament, no longer the ‘New’;
  • because you’ve changed your food choices to’ kosher’;
  • because you worship on Saturday instead of Sunday;
  • because you no longer go to a christian church nor attend christian fellowship;
  • Because you no longer believe that Jesus Christ is God;
  • because your God is the ‘Jewish God’;
  • because you observe ‘Jewish feasts’;
  • because you’re using Hebrew terms like Shalom, Shabbat, Tanach, Torah, etc.
  • because you use Jewish symbols and trappings (mogen David, menorrah, tzitzit, kippa, etc.)

Obviously, all the above are associated with Jewish people, with Israel. So, it is understandable that anyone who starts incorporating such changes in one’s lifestyle makes one appear indeed like a “Jew-wannabe”.

Admittedly, when we were into Messianic Judaism, we were guilty of all of the above.  At messianic conferences we attended, such Jewish trappings were used and sold and we bought them. Messianics appear like Jew-wannabes. However, we have left Christianity altogether, including Messianic Judaism which is ‘Christianity in Jewish disguise.’ We have found our true spiritual identity and it falls under neither the umbrella of Christianity nor Judaism.

There is a perception that being “biblical” is the same as being “Jewish”.  And by “biblical” we limit the word to apply only to the Hebrew Scriptures [Tanach], that first part of the Christian Bible that has been re-named “Old Testament.”  We’ve been told we should not even use the word “biblical” because that is a Christian term, we should use “scriptural.” We’re not slow to learn nor stubborn about changing when we taste truth as dispensed by the True God.

So the answer is—

  • yes we aspire to live in conformity with the requirements of the commandments given by the God revealed in the Hebrew Scriptures,
  • but no, we do not aspire to become Jews; by our ethnic origins alone, we’re already disqualified.
  • We do appear “wannabe’s” because admittedly, as individuals and as a community, we have chosen to live according to the Torah, the five books attributed to Moses, the only Scriptures we recognize as divinely inspired after non-stop research on how the canon of the New Testament and the Hebrew Scriptures were put together.
  • Such observable changes in our lifestyle are results of our having been enlightened by the original revelation of the God who appeared on Sinai who revealed His Name as YHWH;
  • we are so strongly convicted that we have decided to embrace as many of His commandments as we are able to apply in our current circumstances in this day and age.
  • Those ‘OT’ commandments are obeyed by observant Jews and so, when a gentile observes the same, he is labeled ‘Jew-wannabe’.
  • Actually, if a label is going to be imposed on us, it should run like this:  ‘YHWH-loving gentile who observe’s YHWH’s TORAH.’  Does that sound like a Jew-wannabe?

The very reason we chose ‘Sinai’ as the focal point of our belief system is exactly because Sinai is outside of the promised land, Israel. Sinai is not Jerusalem, associated with Israel and the Jewish people.  If we were really “Jew-wannabe’s” we would simply work on being accepted into any one of the sects of Judaism by fulfilling their requirements.

Sinai is NEUTRAL territory.

If the God of creation, the God of gentile Abraham and Israelite Moses, chose this neutral ground— between the land of bondage and the promised land— to reveal Himself to the nations through a people who would model his pattern for living to the rest of the world, He was very wise in so choosing, if only to indicate that He is the God of all nations, not only Israel.  In fact He is the God of the universe!

There are many scriptural references that show it is His intention to be known to and worshipped by the whole world, but he had to start somewhere, start small, with an identifiable people separated from the nations by the life they live. Thus, His commandments are given to Israel to live out as a nation, so that other nations would be attracted to and want to emulate their lifestyle, their ethical and moral standards to work towards making this earth a haven, if not a heaven on earth.

As we keep repeating in our posts, TORAH was not given to Israel to make the whole world Jewish; it was given to Israel to live it so that the gentiles will realize something is quite different about them, a lifestyle that is attractive and works for the benefit of all nationalities, not just Israelites/Jews. TORAH reveals a God who liberates and does not enslave through impossible laws that are impossible to obey; yes, contrary to Pauline and Gospel teaching that consider YHWH’s LAW as a ‘yoke’ to be liberated from by their Christian version of the Jewish messiah-savior.

TORAH is taught in synagogues by Jewish Rabbis, yes.  But it is not exclusive to them by divine commandment, it has become exclusive only because of the way the world has turned anti-semitic and nobody seems to be interested in a “Jewish” God and His “Jewish” Scriptures. You see, it’s “for them, not us.”  By the misuse and careless use of words alone, wrong thinking and wrong perception are propagated.

There is much to learn from remnant Israel that is Torah-observant, and that is always the place to start . . . and a gentile can join Judaism, the religion that is Torah-based.  But that is not our choice.

We keep saying, our journey of faith is away from Rome, toward Sinai and not Jerusalem.

It is not easy to be in the situation such as we are in—having left religions we had been born in, embraced for decades of our lives, and moved on to another unknown, unpopular, forgotten, done away with, labeled “obsolete” way of living. Please note: not a religion, but a way of living:  the Torah life prescribed by the God of all humankind.

It has been the best decision we have ever made individually and now as a core community.  As new as we are, we have had to constantly explain why we are no longer Christian and why we are not Jew-wannabes.  Now to the next question: “if not, what are you?”

The simplest answer to that question is —

  • We are gentile believers in YHWH,
  • who live by His commandments as best as we can.

What should we be called? Well, for now we have chosen to be called Sinaites. Why?

Here’s an interesting reaction to Sinai 6000 from a Rabbi:

** Comment from RABBI FEDEROW:**

Hello!
I would be honored if you were to include my website in your list of websites as a recommended link. I believe the readers of your website, and those who belong to your group should, read my entire website and not just parts of it.  But as a rabbi i must tell you, you make statements on your website that are simply wrong from a Jewish perspective:

  • “Since one has to be born of a Jewish mother to become a Jew, obviously no gentile is a Jew.”
  • “But since Sinaites are ALL gentiles, the question must mean—we are trying to be like Jews.”
  • “but no, we do not aspire to become Jews; by our ethnic origins alone, we’re already disqualified.””

Biblically Wrong on all counts!!  Please take a look at the Bible in the Book of Esther. Take a look at Esther 2:5  There was a certain Jew in Shushan the castle, whose name was Mordecai the son of Jair the son of Shimei the son of Kish, a Benjaminite.

Here the text is explicit, Mordecai was called a Jew even though he was from the tribe of Benjamin. All those who follow the faith of Abraham, regardless of which tribe they came from, are known as Jews. The people at Mt. Sinai were all Jews, including and eventually the Mixed Multitude because having left Egypt and having joined the Jewish People and having witnessed the Exodus and joined themselves to it, to the people and to the religion, they became Jews as well. That is why there is no mention of them after Numbers, because they had all converted to Judaism and simply became a part of the Jewish People. Abraham is the first Jew and all the Patriarchs and matriarchs and all the sons of Jacob and all the members of all the tribes of Israel were all Jews, and the ex-slaves of egypt were all Jews, too. The only Gentiles at Sinai were the mixed multitudes and they, too, eventually became Jews, and all because the word Jew is used to describe those people, in the Bible and after, who were believers in Torah, the written, and then the Oral Torah as it developed and as Gd wished it to develop over the last 2,000 ++ years.

But more importantly for you and for your website and for all those who are a part of your group worldwide, yes, indeed, it is possible for one to convert to Judaism and become a Jew! And the Bible explicitly says so. Look again at the Book of Esther.

Esther 8:17

And in every province, and in every city, where ever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had gladness and joy, a feast and a good day. And many from among the peoples of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews was fallen upon them.

The Biblical text is clear, “And many from among the peoples of the land became Jews…”  and so it is, in fact, possible to become a Jew through the conversion to Judaism. The Bible explicitly says so. Gentiles can become Jews, as they did in the Bible!

Do you and yours reject Rabbinic Judaism, the way in which Judaism survived over the last 2,000 ++ years as Gd has willed it to survive? IF there was any Judaism that could have been called “Biblical-only Judaism,” which there never was, it ceased to exist as soon as Ezra came back from the exile and not only read the Torah to the people, but he also expounded and explained it (Nehemiah 8:8), using the Oral Tradition. If you reject Rabbinic Judaism, the Judaism that has survived these last 4,000 years, and for the last 2,000 years, then yours will just be another fringe group that will be lost in the passage of time.

If you do, if fact, accept Rabbinic Judaism, then the path for you and all your groups is clear, seek out the rabbis and convert and become real Jews. It is the path that Gd Himself has been leading you down, it is the path that Gd has been leading all of your groups down, and that path leads straight to Judaism, fully Judaism, to the conversion to Judaism and to become Jews!

S6K—P.S.  One more reason why we would be mistaken for Jew-wannabe? We are embraced by the Jewish Club in our city and invited to their celebrations.  And some of our members have started attending Shabbat service at the synagogues in the places they have migrated to because they are isolated but wish to continue worshipping with the God they now identify with.  That God is not ‘Jewish’ but He is the God who revealed Himself as recorded in the Torah which is the first five books of the scriptures of Israel, the TNK.

Oy Searchers! Need help? – April 2017

Image from www.stlucasucc.org

Image from www.stlucasucc.org

04/24/17  “origins of israelite prophecy remain veiled in obscurity. discuss” –  What is the fascination with this post which is the most clicked and frequently visited article?  Find out!

04/18/17 – “caleb bible meaning” – The UNchosen – My servant Caleb – a different spirit

04/16/17 – “can gentile get hshem” – Not sure what this search term means;  possibly, the searcher wishes to know if a non-Israelite or non-Jew, a “Gentile” could approach and be accepted by “hshem”.

HaShem is  Hebrew for “the Name”, the term used in ArtScroll Tanach and Jewish Bibles that do not wish to say the Tetragrammaton name of their God. Christian as well as some Jewish translations simply use LORD for the Name YHWH.

The answer to this searcher’s query is:  God is a universal God!   The God of Israel, YHWH, is also the God of the Gentiles, the Nations, the Peoples.    It’s just that He started with a specific people to whom He would teach His Torah so they could model the Torah life.  The Divine expectation is that other nations would be attracted not only to Torah but would lead them to want to know the Giver of the Torah, the God Who revealed Himself, His Name and His Way on Sinai through His prophet Moses.  When He cut a covenant with the people He liberated from Egyptian bondage, a people He had formed through a particular line indicated in the Patriarchs:  Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and from Jacob the 12 sons, 12 tribes, mixed within the Israelites were Gentiles.

Within the “mixed multitude” that left Egypt were Gentiles, why else would they be called “mixed multitude” if they were all Israelites?  So even if the covenant on Sinai was specific for Israel, His chosen people with a divine destiny to be His “light to the Gentiles”,  there were representative Gentiles in the mix.   Why else would there be nonstop instruction to treat with kindness  and accommodate— the alien, foreigner, the stranger among you”.

Here are posts that might clarify:

04/15/17 “the sons of abraham to hagar and keturah” –

04/14/17  “benmara of hearoyisrael.net” –  2nd search entry, this time including  the pseudonym of the owner/administrator of the website; please refer to the  first entry below:

04/14/17  “hearoyisrael.net” – We are not surprised that this search term landed on our website.  We  hosted the administrator/owner of the website hearoyisrael.net circa 2013, for about 6 months; he went by the pseudonym “Benmara” (Hebrew for “son of bitterness”); a unique individual in many ways, definitely one of a kind.  We featured his teaching as well as the unfinished bible translation he was working on which he titled “His Name Tanakh”.  That translation was what made us link up with him, we were looking for a version that used the Name YHWH.  None of the Jewish bibles would use it; The Artscroll TANAKH used “HaShem” (The Name) instead of the Tetragrammaton while the JPS (Jewish Publication Society) used the same term used in the Christian Old Testament, “LORD”.   In fact, as unfinished as the version was, we made bookform printouts and added it to the Sinai 6000 library, so we still have copies of it.  What made the version interesting to us at the time was the substitution of Hebrew names, titles, words in the text, similar to the Messianic Jewish Bible except the latter was really a Christian Bible in Jewish Dress”.  It appears Benmara was not able to continue maintaining his website after 2013,  actually and admittedly a good resource for non-Rabbinical and  non-Christian interpretation of the Tanakh, from a different perspective of a self-taught and original Scripture-interpreter . We have some posts that still mention him and his work. We believe that as soon as he finds a patron who will support his website, both he and his website will be back on the world-wide-web.

04/12/17 “All thy children shall be taught” – This appeared 2 days in a row, it is the caption in an image we used for a post with a quote from Isaiah 54:13:

“And all thy children shall be taught of Yahweh

and great shall be the peace of thy children.”

And indeed, that should be a promise every parent should hold on to, but it won’t happen unless parents also obey Deuteronomy 6:4-9, the very words in the Shema:

“Hear, O Israel:  YHWH our God, YHWH is one.

You shall love YHWH your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.

You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise.

You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be frontlets between your eyes.

You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

All_thy_children_shall_be_taug

04/10/17 – Strangely enough, old posts under this category from different past years are being clicked aside from the current; I had to check out why.  I was surprised myself to find out how useful and instructive they still are because the commentary and facts don’t get outdated and are ever relevant to date, just like YHWH’s Torah, His Guidelines for Life are for any people, culture, times.  Isn’t that a wonder, just like the rest of His Created world and the universe? What an all-wise God our King YHWH is!

Here’s a sample entry/answer:

04/27/15 “the jewish torah” –

The Torah of YHWH is not only for “Jewish” application but for universal application; it was part of the Covenant with Israel on Sinai that the mixed multitude that was liberated from bondage in Egypt would now have a new Master and live by this Master’s Way of Life — the Torah.

By calling the Torah “Jewish” it promotes the Christian teaching that the Torah is only for the Jews, since Christians are to live by “grace” and not by “law”.  The Torah of YHWH was given to Israel to model this way of living so that all nations will see the wisdom of living it and will wish to live by it.  This is emphasized in the reiteration of the “law” in Deuteronomy, when Moses repeated the Sinai revelation to the second generation Israelites who were born free, born in the desert and who would enter the Land of Promise led by Joshua and Caleb, the two surviving the 1st generation that left Egypt. That said, here are some posts that might help understand that the Torah is universal and not for Israel alone:

———————————

04/06/17  “photos of holiness to the lord” – Hmmm, frankly I was curious about this myself, and so I googled it just to see what this searcher did find and expectedly, what’s on the net is what is understood and accepted as the Christian definition of “holiness”. So much so, the dictionary defines it thus:

————————————————————-

holy |ˈhəʊli|  adjective (holier, holiest)

1 dedicated or consecrated to God or a religious purpose; sacred: the Holy Bible | the holy month of Ramadan.

• (of a person) devoted to the service of God: saints and holy men.

• morally and spiritually excellent: I do not lead a holy life.

2 dated or humorous used in exclamations of surprise or dismay: holy smoke!

ORIGIN Old English hālig, of Germanic origin; related to Dutch and German heilig, also to whole.

————————————————————–

So what’s wrong with that?  Well, secular definitions most likely follow what is accepted in the ‘domain’ where a word would most likely or normally occur, and in this case, “holy” would be associated with religion, lumped with words like: sanctity, sanctify, sacred, saint, etc.

So how indeed does one translate “holy” into an image, a visual representation?  It’s similar to all those big doctrinal words used by Christianity:  sanctification, justification, glorification, none of which are easily demonstrated through concrete images.

Most likely what this searcher saw on the web were the same as my search: images of churches, fellowship centers, sayings that didn’t help much like:

  •  “I am holy so you must be holy”;
  • “Worship the Lord in beauty and holiness”;
  • “Hope and holiness”;
  • “The Holiness of God”;
  •  “Love God, pursue Holiness”;
  • “Walking in Holiness”;
  • “Perfecting Holiness in the fear of the Lord” . . . etc. etc. etc.

Image feorm spaceamigos.com

Image feorm spaceamigos.com

Well, after all those sayings, I’m sure the searcher was still clueless because “holiness” is one of those abstract words that have to be explained in many ways and usually, a simple face with a halo over the head is the unofficial icon, suggesting all the synonyms listed in the Thesaurus:  “saintly, godly, saintlike, pious, pietistic, religious, devout, God-fearing, spiritual, canonized, beatified, ordained, deified; righteous, good, virtuous,” etc.

The original Hebrew simply is translated as “set apart” or “separated“, from what?  From the common, the profane, suggesting ‘unlike all others’.  Jewish tradition set apart not only the 7th day but family preparations go as far as ‘set-apart’ dishes-utensils-special table settings specific for the Sabbath celebration. One looks at the peculiarity of Israel as a set-apart nation from all other nations, a set-apart people, “holy” . . . for the purpose designated and destined for them by their God — a “holy people” who will be His “light to the Gentiles” who will model His Torah way of life.  One might say they don’t “act holy” – – – well, they’re already “holy” as in “set apart for YHWH’s purposes for them” . . . get it?

Long-winded answer, a usual, for one simple word: by the way, are you “holy” and in what way?  So, how now would you provide this searcher what he needs:  “photos of holiness to the lord”, hmm?

04/01/17  “noahide” – Gentiles who are not into Christianity and don’t wish to join Judaism check out this group who call themselves “Noahides”.  Just so we don’t misrepresent them, check out their website: http://noahide.org

Here are articles we have posted relating to the biblical Noah:

Welcome to Sinai 6000, dear visitors! Whether you’ve landed here accidentally, incidentally or intentionally, linger for a while and check out our 1000+ posts, written and accumulated in the seven years that the “S6K” core community has functioned as a recognizable Gentile Torah-obedient movement. We are a “movement” and a  recommended “lifestyle” in sync with the Guidelines for Living issued by the Self-Revealing God on Sinai, YHWH is His Name! He is the God of Israel we have come to embrace and recognize as the One and Only God, a Unity, not a Trinity.  He is the God of the Nations, not only of Israel, but He is recognizable in His Torah. So we recommend getting to know Him through His Self-Declarations. This website is about Him primarily, and about Gentiles seeking an alternative to major world religions, wishing only to live according to what the One True God has prescribed for all humanity, Jew and Gentile, the two classifications of people-groupings in the Hebrew Scriptures.

First of all, we salute you for being a Truth-seeker; were you not so, you would not be ‘landing’ on this website,  then lingering long enough to get beyond the first page that greets you with a message regarding what to expect from the reading material, some  1000  articles already posted since we joined the world-wide-web February of  2012.

Secondly, if you have consistently returned to read more of everything this site has to offer, we congratulate you for so doing,  because it means you —either have a genuine interest in expanding your knowledge outside the boundaries of your normal reading fare or,  you are in a crisis of ‘faith’, seriously questioning your belief system and seeking answers that satisfy.

If S6K has helped you to expand your mind to many more sides of Truth than what you had previously self-confined and freely decided “this is it, there is nothing more to know” — then we are gratified to know that we have been of help to a few earnest seekers who have become regular visitors, in fact anonymous and nameless “friends” of S6K.

If you are one of such returning visitors, we hope you have learned to navigate through our website— a good place to start is the SITEMAP located at the upper right box above the scroll/active image where 1000 posts are listed, showing the most recent post first under each TOPIC.

Q: What does “L’chaim” mean?

First posted in 2016.  The Sinaite’s Sabbath Liturgy, we openly admit, borrows much from the Jewish Sabbath traditions—from the kindling of two lights to saying goodbye to the Sabbath (Havdalah).   Before the fellowship or family meal, we say a blessing and at the end of that, according to Jewish tradition, we raise our glasses of wine and say “l’chaim” followed by “to Life” and we’ve added our Filipino (Tagalog) language equivalent “mabuhay”.

For those who are not content with a simple translation of l’chaim as “to Life”, here is an article from one of our Jewish website links, chabad.org:

http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/3495203/jewish/What-Is-a-Lchaim.htm

—————————

What Is a L’chaim?

A Wish for Life

The word “l’chaim” means “to life,” and has been the traditional wish Jews share when raising their glasses in celebration for at least 2,000 years. You can read a fascinating treatment of why that term was chosen here.

In time, the term has come to refer to the act of sharing a glass of spirits, and even to the drink itself. Thus, shot glasses are “l’chaim glasses,” and making a toast is “making a l’chaim.”

An Engagement Celebration
This next bit is going to veer a bit off course, so please bear with me. In ancient times, it was customary for a Jewish couple to become legally “engaged” a full year before they would marry. During this time, the bride and groom were considered married, but they did not yet live together. This quasi-married state was known as erusin.
With the destruction of the Temple and the disruption of Jewish life at that time, this became increasingly difficult. What would happen if the bride or the groom were captured, or needed to flee from marauders during the year-long wait?
Thus, it was decided that the erusin should take place in tandem with the marriage itself, and be performed almost immediately before the seven blessings are recited and the couple is joined in full matrimony.

But what was to happen to the engagement? At the time when the two parties decided to go forward with the wedding, a contract was drawn up specifying the date of the wedding and other considerations.

But that, too, presented its share of difficulties.

Backing out of a contract is no simple matter, on a legal or a spiritual plane. It has therefore become customary in many communities to delay the (largely perfunctory) contract signing to the wedding day as well.
So what is left for the engagement? A verbal commitment, called a vort in Yiddish. Thus, a sit-down engagement celebration has come to be known as a “vort.”
Since the occasion will most certainly be celebrated over a glass of firewater and a hearty wish of “l’chaim,” a smaller, more informal party is often called a “l’chaim.”

So now you know:

● If someone invites you to come to a l’chaim, get your party clothes ready.

● If someone invites you to make a l’chaim, get ready for a shot of good stuff and think of something nice to say in return. (If you’re invited to make multiple l’chaims, look for a designated driver.)

KINDLE THE SABBATH LIGHTS

Blessed are You, YHWH, Eternal God,

Who was and is  and will be as You choose to be
to Jews, to Gentiles, and to us, Sinaites.

Blessed are You, All-Existent-One

Who has no beginning and no end,
Whose wisdom designed earthly time,

in seconds, minutes, hours and days, weeks, months and years,

so that humanity could properly function

and coordinate life systems according to phases and stages and processes and cycles.

We are reminded of how You taught Your chosen people

and all who would learn from Your Instructions for Life,

how to track the heavenly bodies and their movements,

for the first sighting of a sliver of the moon

to its fullness in the middle of the month

and to its waning to signal the end of the monthly phase,

marking  the progress of time by lunar cycles,

”for signs, seasons, and appointed times”

a constant reminder of your perfect clockwork.

Your universe has functioned

perfectly since the beginning of Creation week,
from sundown to sundown, on to our days

and on to the end of the age.

May each Sabbath

and each new month

be for us,

a renewal of our love and devotion toward You,
a time to continue to grow in our knowledge of You,
that we may be fruitful for ourselves
for one another, for others not with us,
and specially for the unknown seekers of truth
who find their way into our Sinai 6000 website.

Blessed are You, Creator God whose very first words were

“let there be light”

Who designed heavenly luminaries for visual pleasure and for guidance.

In Your visible Presence on earth,

You manifested as a burning bush, a pillar of fire, a shekinah glory cloud.

These Sabbath candles remind us of Your true source of enlightenment.

Your  “lamp unto our feet” and Your “light unto our path.”

As Torah observers,

may we function as true reflectors of Your Light,

as luminaries in a darkened world,

from Sabbath to Sabbath,

until our final Sabbath Rest.

Indeed,  may it be so!

Psalm 127

A song of ascents. Of Solomon.

Unless the Lord builds the house,
    the builders labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the guards stand watch in vain.
In vain you rise early
    and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep to[a] those he loves.

Children are a heritage from the Lord,
    offspring a reward from him.
Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are children born in one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their opponents in court.

 BLESSINGS

From seed to vine to grape to wine,

This drink brings joy, a delight and a sign

that we started as seeds, matured into vine,

bore fruit like grapes, ripened into wine.

We continue to age, gaining wisdom and truth,

What more could we ask from the Source of all TRUTH,

more life, long life, Your Life, O Giver of LIFE.

[When you raise your wine glasses, to make a toast, say:]

Mabuhay (Live!),

L’Chaim (to Life!).

From seed to stem to grain of wheat,

From flour to dough and baked in heat,

This bread is food that came from seed,

Just like the drastic change we need,

From phase to phase of life indeed.

Lord, God  of the families represented here,
we speak before You

the names of loved ones,

that You might grant them

daily provisions and divine protection,

and Your peace, mercy, and grace,

but more importantly,

may they gain knowledge of You

and wisdom that comes

from the study of your Revelation,

that they may make right choices

and live wisely,

and discover the joy of living

at each stage of their growth.

May they become true seekers of You

and be zealous in pursuit of Your Truth,

so that their names will be worthy

to be written in your Book of Life.

Indeed, may it be so!

HAVDALAH

[From:  The New Union Prayer Book ,

For the Days of Awe]

We hope, Eternal God,

soon to behold the glory of Your might.

Then will false gods vanish from our hearts,

and the world will be perfected

under Your unchallenged rule.

And then will all acclaim You as their God,

and, forsaking evil,

turn to You alone.

Let all who dwell on earth acknowledge

that unto You every knee must bend

and every tongue swear loyalty.

Before You, Eternal God,

let them humble themselves.

To Your glorious Name let them give honor.

Let all accept the yoke of Your sovereign rule,

that You may reign over them soon and forever.

For You are sovereign,

and to all eternity You will reign in glory,

as it is written:

“The Eternal God will reign for ever and ever.”
