How now do we observe biblical feasts? -1

[This was first posted in 2012 and reposted in time for the biblical fall festivals every year.  It is intended to be read simultaneously with the sequel if you are interested in following the Sinaites’ journey through the specific quest for what is for the Jew and what is for the Gentile, according to the Torah.  We have arrived at our own conclusions for ourselves as gentiles who love the God of Israel and who wish to obey His Torah. One doesn’t have to join Judaism nor become Jewish; YHWH is the God for all humankind, for all the nations, for Israel, for those outside of  the chosen people.  This post and its sequel explains this realization which made us start examining more closely what is expected of us.  We hope it helps our readers determine the path each of you should take in your own quest for the One True God and His Way for all people, for Jew and Gentile.—Admin1.]

In the early 1990s when our weekly Christian Bible Study was introduced to Reform Theology, I watched a teaching tape lent by a Reform pastor featuring R.C. Sproul (Robert Charles Sproul, an American Calvinist theologian, author, and pastor, founder and chairman of Ligonier Ministries).    The subject was:  can a Christian deviate from traditional symbols such as those instituted in the Last Supper by Jesus Christ?

If your religious journey has been from Catholicism to Evangelical and on to Messianic Christianity, you can relate to this.

As a Catholic child partaking of communion before Vatican II, you couldn’t eat after midnight, you don’t touch the “host” (thin white wafer); only the priest could touch it and put it in your mouth; once in, you have to be careful the wafer does not stick to your palate because then, you’d have to scrape it off with your tongue, and it always curls no matter what you do, so you have to immediately swallow before you damage it any further. After all, you heard in your catechism classes stories about the wafer actually bleeding when broken, because it is the body of Jesus.  And oh, not to forget, you have to go to confession Saturday to prepare to receive communion Sunday.

At my aunt’s Protestant denomination, I skipped over only on Communion Sunday because aside from the wafer, you get a teeny glass of Welch’s grape juice plus you get to go to children’s bible stories during the pastor’s preaching. Their communion tradition has not changed much.

Well, some of that changed except the wafer; now you don’t have to fast before you receive the wafer in your cupped hands and shove it in your mouth yourself; perhaps in the interest of hygiene the Church today recognizes the healthier way to distribute the wafer in these days of pandemic alerts, careful not to spread germs from the priest’s fingers if he dispenses from mouth to mouth.

Later with Evangelical missionaries, some fellowships used the wafers and small glasses of grape juice on special Sundays; others used white loaf bread cut in cubes; smaller groups used one rough looking home-made loaf from which you tear a piece.

Being a germophobe, the ritual I refused to participate in was drinking wine from the same chalice that got passed around from mouth to mouth, evidence of true fellowship, brotherhood, sisterhood.

Messianics mostly followed Jewish traditions, using unleavened bread on occasions where leavened bread is not allowed, and as for the wine —thankfully, each partook from his own glass; some discussion was on whether or not fermented wine (as in % alcoholic content) was what Jesus and his disciples drank.

Remember — these are Christian denominations observing the same occasion of the Last Supper, but in different ways.

So back to Rev. R.C. Sproul’s passionate preaching.  His point was this: someone in his congregation had asked, did they have to stick to the traditional wine and bread symbols just because that is what Jesus used at the Last Supper? What if they shared a hamburger and a coke from MacDonald’s, would that not be acceptable since what it’s all about is fellowship among believers in Jesus?

Image from dexterpress.com

Image from dexterpress.com

Rev. Sproul almost went ballistic (well, not quite, he did lose his cool);  he insisted on how vital it is to stick to the original symbols, because after all we are remembering a significant event in the life of our Christian Savior.  If wine for the blood and bread for the body were used, then wine and bread it must be. I do remember thinking—easy for Americans and Jews to stick to the original; but what about the poor Asian farmer and his family who only have rice and fish and coconut water? Sproul had a point: the material elements were symbolic of things spiritual.  You could not apply coke for blood and hamburger for body could you now?

Sometimes ignorance is bliss.  What you don’t know doesn’t upset you.  So millions of sincere adherents to this belief system and its traditions continue Sunday after Sunday, holidays of obligation, etc., thinking no further than what preachers and church leaders ordain, just like we did. . . until we opened our eyes and ears to more teaching, this time, from the Messianic perspective which incorporates Jewish traditional observances, but full of Christ-symbolism.

Even before our Christian bible teacher became messianic, he was way ahead, already teaching that the “Last Supper” was really the Passover meal which Jesus and his disciples observed on the eve of his crucifixion.

Image from vimeo.com

Image from vimeo.com

Our teacher said it should not be called the “last supper,” perhaps the “Lords’ supper,” but better yet the Last Passover, since after he–as the sacrificial LAMB — gives up his life, that is it, “it is finished.”  No longer should Jesus’ apostles as Jews look back to their original redemption from Egypt, but this special Passover Seder led by God-Son himself was an inaugural supper of the new covenant, no longer confined within the Jewish family, but the new fellowship of believers in Jesus who, as Passover/Paschal Lamb,  would then fulfill the prophetic feasts of Israel all in one sacrifice of his body and blood.  Messianics recognize the Leviticus 23 feasts as MUST-observe, but with Jesus fulfilling all of them in his earthly ministry.

I had never forgotten the point of Rev. Sproul, mainly because I did not agree with him then but who was I to question the teachings of a Calvinist theologian? I believe then as now, that while traditional, cultural, religious observances are designed to help the believer understand, experience, and even enjoy celebrating church-instituted feasts or biblical feasts, the essence of the feast, its purpose is of the utmost importance, if the manner of observance is not possible under certain circumstances.  For those who can afford to celebrate exactly as they think the original would have been, so be it; for others who cannot, then the teaching, the lesson, the knowledge we gain about God and ourselves as humble worshippers must dominate more than the trappings. It’s really all about God first. And the heart of true worshippers next, even if they have yet to meet the True God.

What comes to mind right now is a report I had seen on TV about a group of Christians in communist China who would meet in secret for worship, and sing hymns without voicing out sounds of words and music, but simply opening their mouths. Truly, that made  my hair stand up!!!  Are they worshipping the God they know and love? Within the limitation of the light they have received and their chosen religious expression, yes of course.  Would God love them back? Wouldn’t you think so? We are all together in this journey of life, seeking God in the places we think He dwells; surely He honors the travellers who continue the journey and don’t get stuck in any religious station, never moving on to the next.  Aren’t we glad we are not sitting on the judgment seat of God? All true seekers are on the way . . . .

Now to Leviticus 23.  What would have been YHWH’s purpose in giving Israel all those details in building the Tabernacle and instituting the feasts? He allowed the Temple to be built inJerusalem, allowed it to be desecrated and destroyed, then rebuilt, then destroyed, then rebuilt, then totally destroyed by the Romans. . . the same political power from which sprung the new political-religious power that recognized Jewish foundations but took off to a different direction.

Surely it was with the permission of the God of Israel for His Temple to be taken out of the center of Jewish religious life eventually . . . and the Jewish sages have had to think and rethink what are the substitutes when they are in other countries, other cultures, other times.   And what about us, non-Jews in transition, just awakening to the TORAH of YHWH, slowly shaking off the last traces of influence on our thinking of our past religious orientation?

TORAH 101 – “Ten Days of Repentance” – Jewish Perspective

Image from www.yomkippur-2016.com

Image from www.yomkippur-2016.com

[First posted in 2012.  This is from Jewish Literacy: The Most Important Things to Know about the Jewish Religion, Its People and Its History, by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin. What is strange to us gentiles who stand to gain from an informative book like this,  is the fact that the book was actually intended for Jews who are— what Telushkin calls —“Jewishly illiterate,” meaning “the most basic terms in Judaism, the most significant facts in Jewish history and contemporary Jewish life, are either vaguely familiar or unknown to most modern Jews.”  At this time of the year when Yom Kippur or Day of Atonement is upon us, we are featuring the chapters of this book that are relevant to the celebration of the fall feasts.

Sinaites who used to be in Messianic congregations have not only been exposed to these festivals but have celebrated these but with Jesus at the center and present in the OT symbolism, from the Tabernacle design to the sacrifices to the High Priest, and of course, particularly as the Atoning Sacrifice on Yom Kippur.  Now they are weaning themselves from that Christ-connection and reviewing Leviticus 23 from the gentile perspective.  For now, we are featuring only how observant Jews memorialize these biblical feasts.  Perhaps by next year, a Sinaite perspective will have been  formed; this early on, we have learned to separate what is biblical from what is Jewish tradition/culture, what is Torah and what is rabbinical interpretation.  We encourage our readers to learn to do the same while reading this series.  Reformatting and highlights ours.]

—————————-

Aseret Y’Mei Teshuva

DURING THE WEEKS BEFORE ROSH HA-SHANA, AND CONTINUING through Yom Kippur, Jews traditionally greet each other with “Le-shana tova teekataivu—May you be inscribed for a good year.”  The “inscription” referred to is based on a verse in (Psalms 69:29) which speaks of a “book of life” into which God inscribes the names of the righteous.  Jewish folklore teaches that God writes down the names of all who will live through the coming year into this Book of Life.

Of course Judaism does not believe in a literal Book of Life.  God’s memory presumably suffices to recall each person’s fate; He does not need to write down names.  Nonetheless, folk imagination has long endowed the Books of Life and Death with a tangible existence, and during prayers many Jews imagine the two books open in front of God.

The Talmud itself speaks of three books:

  • Those who are clearly righteous are immediately inscribed in the Book of Life,
  • those who are clearly wicked in the Book of Death,
  • and all others are classified as beinonim (in the middle), and their fate is decided between Rosh ha-Shana and Yom Kippur.

In Jewish tradition today, all Jews are advised to consider themselves beinonim.

For that reason, the days between Rosh ha-Shana and Yom Kippur assume tremendous significance; how one acts during these days may well influence God’s decree.  This ten-day period is known as the “Ten Days of Repentance” (Aseret Y’mei Teshuva), and during this time, religious Jews take special care to give to charity, to avoid gossiping (see Tzedaka and Lashon ha-Ra), and to be helpful to others.  If one has a big favor to ask of a religious Jew, it is not a bad idea to wait until the Aseret Y’mei Teshuva to do so.

YOM KIPPUR

THE ERRONEOUS PERCEPTION OF YOM KIPPUR AS A DAY OF SADNESS IS due in large measure to it being a fast day.  The holiday’s goal, however, is not self-mortification but rather to bring about reconciliation between people, and between individuals and God.  Concerning the character of the holiday, the rabbis of the Talmud wrote:  “There were no days as happy for the Jewish people as the 15th of [the Hebrew month of] Av [a day on which marriages were arranged] and Yom Kippur” (Mishna Ta’anit 4:8).

Another popular myth about Yom Kippur is that all-day attendance at synagogue, accompanied by earnest praying, wins forgiveness from God for all sins.  In fact, the only sins forgiven on Yom Kippur are those committed against God.  As for offenses committed against people, the Mishna write, “Yom Kippur does not atone until [one] appeases his neighbors” (Mishna Yoma 8:9).

Therefore, Jewish tradition encourages people to begin the process of repenting (see Teshuva) well in advance of the holiday.  If one has injured or offended another person, one is obliged to request forgiveness sincerely.  Even if the request is refused initially, at least two more attempts at reconciliation should be made.  The victim of the offense likewise is required to be forgiving, provided the request for forgiveness is made sincerely.  The rabbis regard a person as cruel who withholds forgiveness even after three requests.

Obviously, this designation would not necessarily apply if the offense committed was extreme or if it inflicted irrevocable damage.

Yom Kippur is the only fast day mandated in the Torah (Leviticus 23:27; the verse specifically speaks of “afflicting your souls”).  The fast commences an hour before the holiday begins, and concludes 25 hours later.  On Yom Kippur, Jews are also forbidden to drink any liquid, bathe, engage in sexual relations, or wear leather shoes.  The latter prohibition was intended to somewhat diminish comfort on this holiday of introspection.  A popular modern explanation for the ban on leather shoes suggests that it would be presumptuous to appear before God asking for mercy while wearing shoes made from the skin of a slaughtered animal.  As a result of this ban, traditional Jews dress incongruously on Yom Kippur—attired in their most formal suits and dresses, but with running or tennis shoes on their feet.

The last meal before the holiday is known as the se’uda mafseket (closing meal).  It is usually a fairly light early dinner; traditionally, boiled chicken is served.  Many Jews serve only one course.  Salty and spicy foods are avoided so as not to make the fasters thirsty.

[Note:  there is a whole paragraph about who in the Jewish community are exempted from the fast, or may observe an age-appropriate variation, etc.]

Yom Kippur has the longest synagogue service of any day in the Jewish year.  [Description of the whole service, about 6 paragraphs are not reproduced here.]

Given the life-and-death issues dominating the day of Yom Kippur, why does the Talmud regard it as a happy day?  Because by its end, people experience a great catharsis.  If they have observed the holiday properly, they have made peace with everyone they know, and with God.  By the time the fast ends, many people therefore feel a deep sense of serenity.

A Sinaite’s Liturgy – 2nd Sabbath of October

KINDLE THE SABBATH LIGHTS

Image from www.homesteadoriginals.com

Image from www.homesteadoriginals.com

We meet once again at sundown,  erev Shabbat,

to welcome the Queen of all days,

to seek our Lord YHWH’s blessings upon our celebration

as we enjoy one another’s company,

and acknowledge His Presence;

for YHWH is truly the invisible Guest of Honor

Who graces the special gathering

of all keepers of His Holy Sabbath.

We avow that the fourth commandment in the Decalogue

is not a burden but a pleasure to obey in special observance,

a most welcome respite from the routines of our six day workweek,

necessary for humanity’s physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing,

Image from sabbathmoments.wordpress.com

Image from sabbathmoments.wordpress.com

truly a gift of rest,

for all that have the breath of life should enjoy,

not only as an indulgence,

but as a matter of survival,

besides enhancing our quality of life.

We thank the LORD of the Sabbath, YHWH,

for commanding us to enter Your sanctuary in time,

to seek Your company

while in fellowship with our faith community,

for renewal of family ties and friendship,

and for worship of You

and the study of Your Torah.

We recall the words of Your mouthpiece,

the prophet Isaiah, as he addressed Israel:

If you refrain from trampling the sabbath,

from pursuing your affairs on My holy day;

If you call the sabbath “delight,” YHWH’s holy day “honored”;

And if you honor it and go not your ways

Nor look to your affairs, nor strike bargains—

Then you can seek the favor of YHWH.

I will set you astride the heights of the earth,

And let you enjoy the heritage of your father Jacob—

For the mouth of YHWH has spoken.

[Isaiah 58:13-14 in modern application:]

“If you watch your step on the Sabbath
and don’t use my holy day for personal advantage,

If you treat the Sabbath as a day of joy,
God’s holy day as a celebration,
If you honor it by refusing ‘business as usual,’making money, running here and there—
Then you’ll be free to enjoy God!
Oh, I’ll make you ride high and soar above it all.
I’ll make you feast on the inheritance of your ancestor Jacob.”
Yes! God says so!

As Gentiles who worship You, the God of Israel,

and embrace Your firstborn son Israel as our brother;

we pray for peace in the Holy Land,

for peace of heart and mind,

and continued protection of the Jewish people

amidst the threats they face continually.

We pray for their survival during non-stop assaults

from hostile nations, religious radicals, antisemitics,

but most specially the angry enemy within their own borders,

with whom they need to deal with wisdom,

and if at all possible, to find mutual understanding,

and convince the ‘other’ to agree to live in peaceful co-existence

in their individual sacred space and communal shared spaces

in the city of ‘shalom’, Yireh Shalem, Yerushalayim, Jerusalem,

in the land of promise, divinely set apart

to provide Israel rest from her strivings

which Israel’s national history sadly has not realized

since the prophesied return of their remnant

to the Holy Land.

We pray for their unity not only in matters of ethnicity and culture,

but most of all, unity in matters of faith,

in belief and trust in You, their God,

that the secular among their population

who are spread out all over the world

will return to the last recourse which should be the first,

when all human possibilities for peace have been exhausted,

that all Israel will unite in calling on Your Name, YHWH,

the God of their Patriarchs,

the God Who chose them to be Your covenant people

the custodians of Your Manual for Life for all humanity,

Who prepared them to become a blessing to the world,

and a light to the nations.

May they fulfill their destiny to be both blessing and light,

as doubters even among them live in unbelief,

as people of faith await the fulfillment of prophecies

regarding a “chosen” people whose very survival

and presence in this age of skepticism,

is the testimony to You as the One and Only God,

and to the truth of Your pronouncements from ancient past

as recorded in their Hebrew Scriptures.

You are the God whose Name

is etched in their individual consciousness

and collective memory,

and whose acts are recorded in their national history.

We thank You for the blessing Israel has been to the world,

for fulfilling the role you have assigned them as witnesses for You despite the odds they face,

for recording the Torah

for all humanity to consider as a Way of life,

for their contributions

to the advancement of knowledge

in all fields of learning,

and contributions to the quality of life

brought about by the brilliance and genius

of their outstanding achievers.

We cling to the promises uttered by Isaiah to Israel,

for just like observant Jews,

we consider Your Holy Day, the Sabbath,

as a day of joy, a day of celebrating life,

a day to delight in, devoted to connecting with You,

O YHWH, God of Israel,

God of the Nations,

God of Sinaites,

Lord of the Sabbath.

As Gentiles,

virtual ‘outsiders looking in’,

may we share in the blessings You have promised Israel,

Gentiles who have embraced You, the God of Israel,

Gentiles who love you with all mind, heart and soul,

Gentiles who obey Your commandments,

and who live Your Torah.

Amen.

To know You, the one True God, and to know Your Name, O YHWH, is a blessing.

To know that You have prescribed a way of life

for all people on earth

and to live it day by day,

is a blessing.

To be in the company of individuals

who worship and love You

and love one another,

is a blessing.

To be born in a loving family—

parents, siblings, spouses,

children and grandchildren —

is a blessing.

To fellowship with one another every Sabbath

and share the joy of your provisions

symbolized by the bread we share

and the wine we drink—is a blessing.

For all these and so much more,

for daily graces and mercies and provisions

poured into each day of our life on earth—

we thank You, Lord YHWH.

HAVDALAH

Once again we remember Your words through your mouthpiece, Isaiah:

No longer shall you need the sun for light by day,

Nor the shining of the moon for radiance [by night];

For YHWH shall be your light everlasting.

Your God shall be your glory.

Your sun shall set no more.

Your moon no more withdraw;

For YHWH shall be a light to you forever.

And your days of mourning shall be ended.

And your people, all of them righteous,

Shall possess the land for all time;

They are the shoot that I planted.

My handiwork in which I glory.

The smallest shall become a clan.

The least, a mighty nation.

I, YHWH, will speed it in due time.

May it be so for Israel!

And as for us who are not of ethnic Israel,

may our names and the names of our loved ones

be written in YHWH’s Book of Life,

as we each make the right choice

every time we are challenged to make a compromise,

a choice to align our will with Your Will

in every situation where we are tempted

to submit to the ‘I’ in I-dolatry,

instead of the ‘I’ in Your Image.

May we write our personal Book of Life

by the way we live moment by moment,

day by day, year by year, on to the end of our days.

May the words we hear from YHWH, our Life-Giver be–

“well done, Gentile, Sinaite,

[say your name]______________

who heard My Voice from Sinai,

who took My Torah seriously,

who strives to know Me and My Way,

and calls on My Name,

who responded to the challenge given to Israel

to ‘choose life’—

May Your message to us be —

“You are among My Chosen.”

Amen.

A Sinaite’s Musical Liturgy – 1st Sabbath in October

Image from www.grace4all.com

Image from www.grace4all.com

[Reminder to new web-visitors; Sinaites are former Christ-believers and as such, our hymnody is deeply rooted in Christian music.

We have adopted the music but changed the lyrics which now express our Sinaite creed; occasionally we choose to retain the hymn in its original because it reflects our sentiments.   It takes time to get used to this strange mix, even some of our own have difficulty adjusting. If you are not familiar with the music, reciting the phrases work just as well.  After all , sung or spoken, the message resonates.  This season being the remembrance of Sinai 6000’s awakening, the songs are specifically chosen to reflect our Truth-quest.–Admin1.]

4.   He is Righteous, He is Just, hal-le-lu-jah!

He is full of Grace and Mercy, hal-le-lu-jah!

Kind and loving God is He, hal-le-lu-jah!

Holy and Eternal God, Yahuwah, hal-le-lu-jah!

[Original Tune:  “Go to Dark Gethsemane”/Revised Lyrics: “Go from Egypt, Israel”]

1.  Go from Egypt, Israel . . .

walk across the Sea of Reeds.

Through the desert wilderness,

On His manna, water, feed . . .

journey on toward your God,

Who has from your bondage freed.

2.  Pitch your tent and breathlessly,

watch and wait that you might see;

Up from yonder mountain peak,

hear His Voice in thunder speak,

Bow and tremble as you hear,

Words of wisdom, don’t you fear.

3.  YAHUWAH, your Elohim,

Adonai and El Shaddai.

Fear not, never be in shame,

Blest are those who speak His NAME!

There is no one else on earth,

He has chosen you from birth.

4.  Gentiles from all nations, hear!

To Mount Sinai, gather near. . .

Timeless words for life ring clear,

From the past through all the years,

Israel has shared His Word,

Heed to prove that you have heard.

[Borrowed Tune:  Beneath the Cross of Jesus/Revised Lyrics: “Beneath that Sacred Mountain”]

Image from jesusvanluiz.blogspot.com

Image from jesusvanluiz.blogspot.com

1.  Beneath that sacred mountain I virtually take my stand;

the shadow of a mighty Rock within a weary land;

a home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way,–

from the burning of the noontide heat, and  burden of the day.

2.  O safe and happy Shelter, O Refuge tried and sweet;

O trysting place where Heaven’s Love and Heaven’s Justice meet!

As Jacob in his wondrous dream had wrestled with the One,

a ladder full of angels going up and coming down.

3.  There lies beneath its shadow but on the further side;

the darkness of man’s ignorance that gapes both deep and wide;

but Light shines forth from Sinai’s peak, a thunderous voice that speaks —

to multitudes of Israelites and Gentiles in their midst.

4.  Upon that sacred mountain, my eyes at times can see—

though centuries have passed and I was not and could not be —

among the generation that received His Covenant,

All that I need to do is read the Exodus account.

5.  I take Sinai, thy shadow for my abiding place;

I ask for nothing more than that I meet Him face to FACE,

I’ve journeyed all my life to find the Truth and know His Name,

YAHUWAH is the God I worship, His the Name I claim!

[Original Tune: “Turn your eyes upon Jesus”/Revised Lyrics:  “Turn your eyes toward Sinai”]

1.  Dear seeker of God are you searching

for truth, for more light, for THE WAY,

look back to the start of your journey,

the map that has always been there . . .

CHO:  Turn your eyes toward Sinai,

that’s where the Almighty was seen,

in the burning bush, in the flashing light

what a vision, a glorious sight!

2. If only the world would remember

the Words He had spoken back there,

in the wilderness, out in the desert,

the truth all humanity should hear . . .

CHO: Hear O Israel hear! [or ‘Hear, ye nations all, hear!]

YAHUWAH,  True God, He is One,

You shall love YAHUWAH with all your heart,

all your being,  and all of your might.

3.  His Words will not fail you—He promised,

believe and obey and be blessed,

but when there is failure, there’s pardon,

if you would but humbly repent . . .

CHO:  Turn your eyes on the TRUE ‘ONE’,

YAHUWAH the First and the Last,

No one comes before, there are not ‘two’ more,

HE was One, He’s still One, will be One!

Yes, YAHUWAH, Lord God, He’s the ONE!

With the constant sighting of the phases of the moon,

indicating time’s progress through this month,

we are humbled at the thought

that You prepared a perfect universe

and a perfect planet designed

not only for the sustenance of all life,

but also for the enjoyment and pleasure

of the only being created in Your image,

sentient, self-conscious, self-willed—humanity.

O YHWH, Creator of all existence,

need there be any doubt in our mind

regarding Your love for us?

We marvel at this perfect environment in which we live,

complete with everything that would nurture

and sustain the diversity of life forms that inhabit it,

but most specially the life of each human being

ever born into this world.

We are amazed at the capabilities of the human body,

which houses mind and heart and soul,

with its intricate workings,

its built-in protective self-healing immune system

which modern medicine can tap into

as the first line of defense against disease;

all work together to ensure

that we live out our existence in the best of health

while Your breath of life is still in us.

We are humbled as we recognize and acknowledge

that You,  O YHWH,

are the Creator and Designer

of everything that exists,

whether visible or invisible to the eye.

How should we respond?

How can we show our deep gratitude

for all that You have done for us?

Who are we that You should give us this much blessing

just in our natural environment alone,

and within ourselves, and so much more?

Indeed, who are we that You are mindful of us?

You have put man in charge of all creation,

given the mandate to ‘tend the garden’ . . .

yet in this day and age we witness

the deterioration, degradation and destruction

of the only habitable planet in the vast universe

that You have designed perfectly

out of love for us.

As we begin to approach the season

for self-examination,

for accountability to You—

we ask for forgiveness, O Creator God!

We respond in all humility,

wondering how best could we express our love for You?

For one of many ways,

by tending Your garden in our little patch of earth,

so that our generation and future generations

might continue to survive

till the End of Days.

We resolve to do in small and big ways,

in the space we occupy

through the life we live

and the lives we are able to influence,

to respect, nurture and sustain the diversity of life in all its forms,

realizing that only from YOU comes the very breath of life,

granted every creature, big and small, simple and complex.

May we have a deep respect for life

in all its manifestations in Your magnificent ‘garden’

O YHWH,

Creator or our planet Earth, Source of all life.

Psalm 67

May YHWH favor us and bless us,

May He illuminate His countenance with us, Selah.

To make known Your way on earth,

among all nations Your salvation.

The peoples will acknowledge You—all of them.

Regimes will be glad and sing for joy,

because You will judge the peoples fairly

and guide with fairness the regimes on earth, Selah.

The peoples will acknowledge You, O YHWH;

the peoples will acknowledge You — all of them.

The earth will then have yielded its produce;

May YHWH, our God, bless us.

May YHWH bless us,

and may all the ends of the earth fear Him.

We thank You for blessing us with loved ones,

each and every one of them—-[names]

parents

siblings

spouse

sons/daughters

extended family

grandchildren.

We thank You for the gift of friendships

that have endured through time,

for those still among us,

and others who have left our company;

We thank You for our faith community of Sinaites,

those of us who  celebrate Your Sabbath together,

others who have joined Jewish synagogues

that they might learn Your Torah

directly from Your chosen people;

others who live in faraway lands

but connect with us and one another

through the celebration of Your Sabbath

and the continuing study of Your Torah.

Indeed we serve only You,

O YHWH, Lord of the Sabbath,

Who has blessed us with daily provisions—

this bread of nourishment,

this wine of joy,

our sheer delight in all that Your Sabbath brings

to the end of our work-week.

HAVDALAH

[Note:  Borrowed Prayer/Source unknown]

Oh God [YHWH],

You have called us into life,

and set us in the midst of purposes we cannot measure;

but we thank You for the good we know,

and pray that we will learn to be patient

until You send more light.

Waken our hearts to gratitude, O Lord,

for mercies have flowed upon us day by day:

in health and sickness,

in labour and repose,

in the ever renewed beauty of earth and sky,

in thoughts of truth and justice

which stir us from our ease and quicken our endeavor,

and in the contemplation of Your eternity,

which fills us with hope

that what is good and lovely cannot perish.

O train our spirits more and more

into accord with Your pure will!

Amen.

09/24/16 “happy sabbath greeting cards” – We have no greeting cards in this site but we do avail of Sabbath greetings available on the web; feel free to use any of our images, just make sure that just as we do, you acknowledge the source.

09/21/16  “uncircumcised lips” – [Reprinting what we wrote on 09/17/16 ]

This  is another search phrase that appears quite frequently since we used it in the title of an Exodus chapter:  “Do you have uncircumcised lips?”  The word “uncircumcised” is used in an actual quotation uttered by the most notable of YHWH’s handpicked leaders/mouthpieces —Moses (others are the 3 major and 9 minor prophets),

Whaaaattt???   Moses used that term referring to himself???   Actually,  so did the prophet Isaiah, and probably those with enough humility who consider themselves unfit to represent in both speech and person, the awesome God of Israel, their LORD and MASTER.  Represent to whom?   To clueless people like the Pharaoh of Egypt who is elevated to divinity (at least on his turf), as are emperors who all–not a surprise–die and join the heirarchical pantheon of pagan gods and are immortalized at least in forced idolatrous worship.  Really?  Divinity dies?  Yes, humans elevated to divinity status do, after all they are mere creatures with a beginning and end in earth time; henceforth they ‘live’ only in the minds/hearts of their worshippers (throw in canonized saints, Mary mother of Jesus who is now elevated to co-mediatrix and co-redemptrix).

But back to the topic:  whatever the original Hebrew phrase was,  one  English translator used “uncircumcised” instead of the more common “unclean lips”  symbolizing unholy or profane speech or ordinary language not fit to represent the God of Israel.

More about this in the introduction to the post:

09/19/16 – Christianity’s historical roots –  Unexpectedly, our journey away from our former faith, Christianity, began with the simple curiosity regarding its roots.   Our first sources were mere entries in Encyclopedia (American & British); today one would mostly likely resort to google and end up with Wikipedia, maybe even Sinai 6000?

Neutral sources are  good places to start, the writers are objective recorders of facts, no religious agenda whether to defend or attack. You discover how this major world religion evolved from its much-speculated past about starting as a spin-off from Judaism and  eventually developing into a major world religion through its political alliance with the Roman empire through the converted emperor Constantine. (What??!! Jesus and his followers were not Christians??)

These selections from our SITEMAP category titled CHRISTIANITY will get you started on your truth-search about your religion.  Then take it from there, there is no dearth in publications on the same topic in this day and age.

This has been clicked quite frequently, so here’s the image.

The Jewish (biblical) calendar is approaching year-end and starting the New Year; for the curious, here’s a link for biblical new year 5777.  This is the actual year of the TRUE LORD YHWH in HIS TIMELINE (configured from biblical count-up for the seven millennia leading to “end of days” in Jewish thinking.  Remember,  part of antisemitism was the reconfiguration of earthly time counting down to B.C. (“Before Christ”, now B.C.E., “before the common era”) and starting the count-up A.D.  (“After Death”, now C.E. “common era”).  All these adjustments to suit the Gregorian calendar of the Catholic Pope Gregory and “in the year of our Lord (Jesus Christ).  Well, there is only one LORD for Israel and we join them in acknowledging WHO it is, His Name is YHWH.  Check out this link:

Shabbat shalom dear Truth-Seekers, let us joyfully celebrate YHWH’s ‘appointed times’ intended for all, Jew or Gentile, and that is our day of rest— His weekly Sabbath.

———————-

While we’re waiting for search term entries from our website-visitors,  here are some thoughts for this new month.

For some reason, the month of September is an inspiration to songwriters who have composed memorable tunes like “September Song”, “Try to Remember”, “September Morn”.   It is the month that ushers in the fall season or autumn, hence “Autumn Leaves”, “Autumn in New York”, etc.  (Sorry, my music memory is dated and ends where rap trend begins).  But enough of secular memories.

In terms of biblical memory,  what does the TIMELESS ONE require of His enduring chosen people to remember to commemorate for all time?

Read Leviticus 23 titled “My Feasts” (not ‘your Feasts’) which Israel was commanded to celebrate. Hebrew translations use “appointed times” or, if we might modernize, our ‘appointment/date’  with the LawGiver Who prescribed a complete lifestyle in the Torah.

Were the feasts or ‘appointed times’ only for Israel . . . or for all humanity?

We Sinaites have decided that for gentiles like us, we celebrate only those that are universal and not specific to Israel since it is part of their history as a nation.  The gentiles’ appointed times with the God of Israel, the God of the Nations, Creator/Revelator on Sinai, LawGiver:

  • the weekly Sabbath,
  • the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur)
  • and the anniversary of the giving of the Torah, initially to Israel so they can model the Torah lifestyle for all nations/peoples to observe and be attracted to enough to apply to themselves.

[“Which candle are you?” That was the question in our 2015 Sabbath liturgy.

In hindsight, it was prophetic because since then, one ‘light of life’ in our very small core community was extinguished on January 23 this year, namely VAN@S6K, the most senior among us. But while his lonnngggg life-wick did finally burn out at age 88, his legacy and contribution to framing the Sinaite Creed is enshrined in our Home Page declaration. Those of us who continue the work are hopeful that beyond our lifetime, Sinai 6000 will serve as a beacon for gentiles who are seeking another pathway diverging from world religions — a simple individual life journey—

  • toward the beckoning LIGHT of the Sinai Revelation,
  • to meet the God Who once spoke to representative humanity,
  • Whose Words are recorded in the TORAH, the first part of the Scriptures of Israel.
  • That God gave His Name as YHWH.

Enjoy this Sabbath liturgy, dear Sinaites and web-visitors. We are connecting in spirit not only with faceless-nameless strangers, kindred-spirits for sure, whose repeated visits we see on our SITESTATS.  We connect as well with the original core community of 25 Sinaites spread all over the globe,  who collectively and individually braved deviating from their  lifelong pilgrimage as Christians worshipping a ‘Trinitarian Godhead’, and veering toward the One True God Who spoke from historic Sinai.

On our 6th anniversary, we fondly remember three co-travellers who fast-forwarded their trek to Spiritual Sinai to seek their final Sabbath Rest with the True Lord of the Sabbath.

Shabbat shalom!—Admin1]

KINDLE THE SABBATH LIGHTS

O Lord YHWH,

Creator, Master, Designer of the universe,

Lord of the Sabbath, God of Israel and the Nations,

Revelator on Sinai, LIGHT of the world:  YHWH!

You are King enthroned in the heart of each spiritually awakened individual—

who has heard Your voice from Sinai,

who acknowledges You as the One True God,

who proudly declares Your Name with reverence and awe,

who meets with You for all the Sabbaths apportioned in each one’s lifetime,

who lives in obedience to Your commandments

as You have laid out before Moses and the mixed multitude on Sinai,

intended for all generations of humanity who live in community,

whether chosen like Israel,

or un-chosen like gentiles —such as we, Sinaites—

who have individually and collectively chosen You

to be Lord and Master and Ruler over our lives.

Truly we are privileged and blessed,

O Lord YHWH,

to know You as much as we have come to know You now,

having journeyed for so long seeking You,

not going any farther than the religions

we were born in or had chosen,

thinking that surely, all religions would lead

to the true knowledge of You and Your Way of life.

Our quest has taken almost a lifetime,

because we were not born like observant Jews

into a set-apart culture and community

where Your Name is known though remain unspoken,

and Your Torah is taught and learned from early childhood.

Still, Lord YHWH, we are blessed to have found You

as the universal God sought by religionists

in all seasons of one’s lifetime;

but most specially we are blessed to have found You,

Revelator of the Torah, God of Jew and Gentile alike,

even in the autumn instead of the spring of our lives,

for our lifelong quest which took many twists and turns

in uncovering and discovering more truth and more light—

truly has not been wasted.

Just like candles that are lit at different times

and therefore uneven in length of light-bearing,

some of us have shorter wicks

but no shorter in our dedication and zeal

to serve You and worship You as our God,

to make Your Name known,

to be as guides to gentiles like ourselves,

who are seeking and interested in study

so that they might learn to live out Your Torah.

Who are we but mere flickers in a world which,

in this sixth millennium is still very much ‘in the dark’,

a world with capability to acquire instant information

and unlimited knowledge through information technology;

yet still strangely, many remain uninformed about You,

O YHWH, the One true God,

innocently uninformed if not willfully ignorant,

or willfully negligent,  or willfully disobedient,

or willfully choosing to remain in unbelief,

 —-doubting Your very existence,

—-questioning the veracity of Your manual for living,

and its relevance to the lives of those outside Israel.

This world still fails to comprehend

—–the significance of Your Sinai revelation

—-its relevance to life in all cultures and in all times.

This world still goes the way of self-centeredness and self-will,

unable to grasp the message and lessons from biblical narratives,

that teach the blessings for obedience,

as well as the consequences of disobedience,

—-since the testing of the first couple

—-to the failures of the chosen nation,

between Genesis and Deuteronomy,

and beyond the writtenTorah attributed to Moses,

as recorded in the national and sacred history

of the custodians of Your Sinai Revelation.

O Lord YHWH,

It is our fervent wish and the desire of our heart and earnest prayer—

that You will be known by all people,

that Your Name will be spoken with reverence and awe

from Sabbath to Sabbath,

that You will be worshipped by all nations,

that world religions will enthrone You and You alone—

as King, as Lord, as Creator-God—

that they will finally see and acknowledge the ‘light of Israel’

that has shone through millennia

since the people’s formation from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,

to the birth of the nation at Sinai;

a light that might have been dimmed by their failure to be obedient,

as their nation’s history attest,

but a light that shines nevertheless,

only because You, their God who chose them,

have been faithful to all Your declarations, promises,

and acts in history on their behalf.

The saga of their survival and very existence is one continuing testimony

that You, YHWH, their God,

are indeed the One True God,

the One and Only.  AMEN.

The SHEMA: Deuteronomy 6:1-9, 7:6-9.11

Image from www.pinterest.com

Image from www.pinterest.com

6:1  Now this is the commandment, the laws and the regulations

that YHWH your God has commanded (me) to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing into to possess,

2  in order that you may hold YHWH your God in awe,  by keeping all his laws and his commandments that I commend to you,

you, and your child, and your child’s child,

all the days of your life;

and in order that your days may be prolonged.

3  You are to hearken, O Israel,

and are to take-care to observe (them)

that it may go-well with you,

that you may become exceedingly many,

as YHWH, the God of your fathers promised to you—

(in) a land flowing with milk and honey.

4  Hearken O Israel:

YHWH our God, YHWH (is) One!

5  You are to love YHWH your God with all your heart,

with all your being,

with all your substance!

6  These words, which I myself command you today, are to be upon your heart,

7  You are to repeat them with your children

and are to speak of them

in your stirring in your house and in your walking in the way,

in your lying-down and in your rising-up.

8  You are to tie them as a sign upon your hand,

and they are to be for bands between your eyes.

9  You are to write them upon the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

7:6  For you are a people holy to YHWH your God,

(it is) you (that) YHWH your God chose for him as a treasured people

from among all peoples that are on the face of the soil.

7  Not because of your being many-more than all the peoples

has YHWH attached himself to you and chosen you,

for you are the least-numerous of al peoples!

8  Rather, because of YHWH’s love for you

and because of His keeping the sworn-oath that he swore to your fathers

did YHWH take you out, with a strong hand,

and redeem you from the house of serfs, from the land of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

9  Know

that YHWH your God, he is God,

the trustworthy God,

keeping the covenant of loyalty

with those who love him

and those who keep his commandments,

to the thousandth generation . . . .

11  So you are to keep the command;

the laws and the regulations that I command you today,

by observing them.

BLESSINGS

Thank You,

Lord YHWH,

for daily graces and mercies,

providence and protection,

so many blessings evident and ‘in disguise’

that come our way

and extended to our loved ones day after day.

We thank You specially for many answered prayers.

[Take the time to publicly or privately mention these.]

Thank You, Lord YHWH,

for the blessing of family:

may all our names be written in Your Book of Life,

those who live today

or have lived  according to Your Torah

because it is written in the heart of all humankind:  [name them]

fathers, mothers, siblings,

husbands wives,

sons, daughters,

extended family,

beloved friends and special people.

Thank You, Lord YHWH,

for Sinaites who are not physically present

but are united with us

in the spirit of celebrating Your Sabbath;

Sinaites  in other cities and countries

who celebrate with observant Jews at the synagogue.

We remember with fondness,

three Sinaites who began this journey with us

but have gone ahead of us,

having ‘graduated’ to their final Sabbath Rest:

—Ciso and Lorna and Vic —

who, the day before they individually departed,

were granted a day they delighted in so much that they literally danced for joy—

Sukkot for Ciso,

and 40th wedding anniversary for Lorna,

and for Vic, a quiet, restful, peaceful sleep

after erev Sabbath celebration.

Would that You grant us the same joy-full ‘celebrating exit’ from this life,

so that those we leave behind

will have a comforting and lasting memory

of peace and bliss

instead of sadness and loss.

Thank You, Lord YHWH,

for opening up a pathway for us

to reach others in search of the gentile alternative—

to joining the three monotheistic religions

that trace their roots to Abraham.

While we have not succeeded in six years time

to draw the interest of those nearest to us and around us,

Yet You have gifted us with a website that has extended our reach

far beyond our circles of influence,

beyond borders we had not imagined we would transcend,

through the amazing information technology of the worldwide web,

devised by exploring freethinkers

who learned to tap into the natural workings

of Your comprehensible universe.

We are so deeply grateful

for the indescribable pleasure

we derive from celebrating every Sabbath,

in the company of one another—

breaking bread, sipping wine,

our special meal provided by our hosts in their lovely home—

the exhilaration that lingers

after our meeting turns into anticipation

through our 6-day-week until the next Sabbath .

Finally, as we have borrowed from Jewish tradition,

we have kindled our Sabbath lights,

we have prayed for blessings,

we now share the bread of fellowship,

we raise this glass of wine, symbol of joy to say:

“to life” — “l’chaim” —“mabuhay”

with the deepest gratitude,

in tribute to the Source of Light and Giver of Life

truly the Love of our life!

HAVDALAH

[Borrowed Tune:  Lord I want to know You more/revised lyrics]

1.  Just the time I think that I’m at peace in a world that’s fine,

I feel at ease, contented with myself and what is mine,

Then in my rest there comes a test that shakes me ’till again I know,

That what I had is not enough and again I’ve got to grow—-

Cho:  Lord, I want to know You more,

deep within my heart I long to meet You,

see You, want to feel You,

where to find You in this world,

I hear You in Your Word, Your Revelation

How to show I love You more,

how I need to serve You more,

worship You, obey You more.

2.  My full supply I find as I move closer to the Truth of God,

to nourish me, to nurture me, to strengthen will and mind,

I’ve truly grown but even so, my hunger hasn’t gone away,

for still I long, and still I thirst, to know You more each day . . .

Cho:  Lord, I want to know You more,

deep within my soul I truly seek  You

how I long to meet You,

I would give my final breath

to know beyond Your Word, Your Revelation,

drive away my doubts before,

feel Your Presence all the more,

live Your life  and so much more!

A World of Deceptions and Forgeries – 3

51ijk9vgS+L._AC_US160_[This was first posted May 27, 2014.  It belongs to a series from one of the books that opened our eyes to the New Testament writings and who might have authored them.  Here are previous posts related to this:

Here is the original introduction:

Continuing with Bart Ehrman’s MUST READ/MUST OWN book titled Forged,  he defines certain terms here.  We posted this part before as evidenced by searchers entering one particular word: “orthonymous”, a search term that appears almost as often as “uncircumcised lips”. Reformatting and highlights added.—Admin1]

—————————-

The Terms of the Debate

THE FIRST TWO TERMS are especially technical and, although I won’t be using them much, it is important to know what they mean.

  • An orthonymous  (literally, “rightly named”) writing is one that really is written by the person who claims to be writing it.  There are seven letters of Paul, out of the thirteen in the New Testament that bear his name, that virtually everyone agrees are orthonymous, actually written by Paul.
  • A homonymous (literally, “same named”) writing is one that is written by someone who happens to have the same name as someone else.  In the ancient world, the vast majority of people did not have last names, and a lot of people had the same first names.  This was true among Christians as it was for everyone else.  Lots of people were named John, James, and Jude, for example.  If someone named John wrote the book of Revelation and simply called himself John, he wasn’t necessarily claiming to be anyone but himself.  When later Christians assumed that this John must be the disciple John, the son of Zebedee it wasn’t really the author’s fault.  He just happened to have the same name as another more famous person.  The book is not forged, then.  It is simply homonymous, assuming that John the son of Zebedee did not write it, a safe assumption for most critical scholars.  It was included in the canon because of this mistaken identity.
  • Other writings are “anonymous,” – literally “having no name.”  These are books whose authors never identify themselves. That is, technically speaking, true of one-third of the New Testament books.  None of the Gospels tells us the name of its author.  Only later did Christians call them Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John; and later scribes then added these names to the book titles.  Also anonymous are the book of Acts and the letters known as 1,2 and 3 John.  Technically speaking, the same is true of the book of Hebrews; the author never mentions his name, even if he wants you to assume he’s Paul.
  • The term “pseudonymous”  (literally, “falsely named”) is a little more slippery, and I need to explain how I will be using it.  Technically it refers to any book that appears under the name of someone other than the author, but there are two kinds of pseudonymous writings.
  • Sometimes authors simply take a pen name. When Samuel Clemens wrote Huckleberry Finn and signed it “Mark Twain” he was not trying to deceive his readers into thinking that he was someone famous; it was just a pen name to mask his own identity.
  • So too when Mary Ann Evans wrote Silas Marner and signed it “George Eliot.”  This use of a pen name did not happen a lot in the ancient world, but it did happen on occasion.
  • The Greek historian Xenophon, for example, wrote his famous work the Anabasis using the pen name Themistogenes; and the Greek philosopher Iamblichus wrote his treatise On the Mysteries under the made-up name Abammon.  In these instances there does not appear to have been any real attempt to deceive readers into thinking that the author was someone famous.
  • The other kind of pseudonymous writing involves a book that is circulated under the name of someone else, usually some kind of authority figure who is presumed to be well known to the reading audience.  For this particular kind of pseudonymous writing I will be using the technical term “pseudepigraphy” (literally, “written under a false name”).  A pseudepigraphical writing, then, is one that is claimed to be written by a famous, or authoritative person who did not in fact write it.
  • But as it turns out, there are also two kinds of pseudepigraphical writing:
    • Sometimes a writing was published anonymously, with no author’s name attached, for example, the Gospel of Matthew.  But later reader and copyists asserted that they knew who had written it and claimed it was by a well-known, authoritative person, in this case, the disciple Matthew.  In writings of this sort, which are wrongly attributed to a well-known person the author is not trying to deceive anyone.  He or she remained anonymous.  It is only later readers who claimed the author was someone else.  This kind of pseudepigraphy, then, involves a “false ascription”; a work is “ascribed” to someone who didn’t write it.
    • The other kind off pseudepigraphy does involve a kind of intentional deceit by an author.  This is when an author writes a work claiming to be someone else.  This is what I am here calling forgery.

My definition of a forgery, then, is a writing that claims to be written by someone (a known figure) who did not in fact write it. . . . it is a technical term referring to one kind of pseudepigraphal writing one in which an author knowingly claims to be someone else.  One of the overarching themes of my book is that those who engaged in this activity in the ancient world were roundly condemned for lying and trying to deceive their readers.
